Republican dark horse emerges as top contender in Iowa: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Republican underdog Mike Huckabee has leapt past three more high-profile rivals to take second place in the latest poll in Iowa, the key US state that begins the party nominating vote on January 3.

The Washington Post/ABC News poll published Wednesday found that 24 percent of Republicans likely to attend the caucus vote would support Huckabee, who stood four percentage points behind former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

Huckabee, a former governor of the southern state of Arkansas, surged past former television star Fred Thompson, who was third with 15 percent, and former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who stood at 14 percent.

He was also well ahead of Senator John McCain, who was tied for fifth with another Republican who has risen in the polls, Representative Ron Paul, with six percent.

Huckabee, who like former Democratic president Bill Clinton was born in the Arkansas town of Hope, has seen his support in Iowa triple from eight percent in a July poll thanks to strong support among Christian conservatives, according to the Post/ABC survey.

Huckabee's support among evangelical Protestants rose 28 percentage points to 44 percent and 19 points among conservatives to 30 percent, the poll found.

Among Republicans who attended the previous caucus, his support rose from nine percent to 29 percent.

Why isn't Ron Paul surging in Iowa like Huckabee?

Because there aren't enough Republicans supporting him, that's why.

The neo-con, Bushbots of Talk Radio have been pushing Huckabee since no one will swallow the gay marriage, homo-riddled, pro-abortion, mafioso, mormon masonics or the nut case P.O.W. republican rubes they initially released as top tier candidates ...

If 1000 people formed a corporation, let's call it FORD, could they force us to buy their PINTO ? How is it then that a similar group could form a STATE and force us to buy their BULLSHIT ?

Hmmm, let me guess, he's one of those that promises to nuke Iran if he becomes president, right?

TNR: The Wrath of Ron

Michael Crowley blogs at TNR:

Ron Paul has raised nearly $4 million in one day. That's four times what Mike Huckabee raised in the entire last quarter. It's still impossible to see Paul winning the GOP nomination. But he will certainly have the money to heavily influence the Iowa and New Hampshire if he chooses--and to make life miserable for any opponents of his choosing. Think Rudy Giuliani might regret jumping down his throat at that first debate?

Glenn Greenwald at Salon writes: Regardless of one's ideology, there is simply no denying certain attributes of Paul's campaign which are highly laudable. There have been few serious campaigns that are more substantive -- just purely focused on analyzing and solving the most vital political issues. There have been few candidates who more steadfastly avoid superficial gimmicks, cynical stunts, and manipulative tactics. There have been few candidates who espouse a more coherent, thoughtful, consistent ideology of politics, grounded in genuine convictions and crystal clear political values. Here is what Jon Stewart said to Paul on The Daily Show: You appear to have consistent principled integrity. Americans don't usually go for that. There is never a doubt that Paul actually believes what he is saying, nor is there any doubt that what he believes is the by-product of critical and rational thought grounded in genuine political passion.

Your twisting the context. Making life miserable is not causing trouble. If Paul wins, then someone will probably be sad and maybe even 'miserable'. You are familiar with politics right?

Making life miserable is not causing trouble.

What purpose does it serve?

Ron Paul seems to me to be a positive guy interested only in his message. He doesn't strike me as wanting to "make life miserable" for the other candidates.

Huckabee = Clinton without the personality.

It's probably what's pushing this possible "annointing", the fact that he's enough of a "governments purpose is to help people" type that the R "thinkers" are beginning to believe he's the choice to woo over "Reagan Democrats" and fence sitters...

Yes.

I saw that interview too. The audience laughed. My take, is he said it as a slam about ourselves.

A couple of nights ago, since all we are seeing is reruns now, Comedy Central replayed Stewarts interview with John McCain from April of this year. It was some serious smack down stuff. The interview itself is not on YouTube, but there is a 2 part piece of Moyers interviewing Stewart about that unusual spat.

Really, I was shocked, when the first thing McCain said is that he should plant an IED under Stewarts desk, and perhaps kick his dog. Then tittered and slung back in his chair in an odd Captain Qweeg eery way. Not a good showing for McCain. Also, he kept repeating himself and talking over Stewart. Stewart told him to just pipe down for a minute, and McCain swung over and said, no YOU pipe down. It was FRRRRRRRRREEEEEEAKY.

I'm glad ComCentral replayed it. Maybe the writers strike will do more good than they know.

Was looking up a little Huckabee stuff a minute ago, catch this:

"The first thing I will do as President is send Congress my comprehensive plan for energy independence. We will achieve energy independence by the end of my second term.

Achieving energy independence is vital to achieving success both in the war on terror and in globalization. Energy independence will help guarantee both our safety and our prosperity.

We have to explore, we have to conserve, and we have to pursue all avenues of alternative energy: nuclear, wind, solar, hydrogen, clean coal, biodiesel, and biomass."

Ah, the Globalist card.

I guess the thinking is that Thompson will take Capt. 911 out, and make Huck victorious.

You know, these people are 'batshit' crazy.

Close but not quite the best - however, according to the Israelis, Huckabee rates a 6.75 ( not too bad and better than the Mittster) for being an American elected Prez who would look out for Israel's interests ( natch)...Dr. Ron Paul is not even listed in Haaretz's poll - I guess Dr. Paul would only look out for America's interests...sigh...

It's time for Americans to get it through their thick skulls that what is good for America is NOT what is good for America.

It only seems that way to Americans' lying eyes.

No, what's good for Israel is good for America. This has been true since 1948 and will be until the Lord (even though he wasn't the messiah, according to Hagee) returns.

You will hear this doctrine of "Israel First" preached not only at all ADL, AIPAC and Southern Poverty Law Center gatherings, but also from the pulpits of Southern Baptist churches all across the Bible Belt nearly every Sunday.

Actually, probably the worst mistake people can make in general is to reassure ourselves these guys are crazy. They are far from it. They are either evil and/or seek elective office as mearly a means to an end (an approach as close as possible, if not to, absolute power over their fellow men).

The intoxicant that is power has rotted the Republic to the core. Every politician who represents themselves as running for office to "do something" for selected subgroups needs to be booted from office. Multi-termers or familial "dynasties" should be treated with the grossest of suspicions. It's amazing that while the Constitution prohibits Bills of Attainder ("tainting" of blood, or the denial of position and property as punishment down familial lines), it sure as shit doesn't prohibit the voting public from doing the same if they'd open their eyes to clans like the Kennedys and Bushes...

I make no mistake at confusing actual crazy with evil, but after reading your post, crazy, let's evil off the hook.

I'm sorry for being so flippant.

True. You will notice that Ron Paul does not promise anyone anything. At times I think this one 'thing' appeals to the spectrum of people tired of the utter BS, and now screaming than the electeds, just step up to their basic oaths. To them, it's nothing but a tired and phony ceremony, and photo op. To the rest of us, the ones between the pages of the book, it means something.

I would like to note that our own new Govenor, refused to take his oath of office in public. And none of the 19 new State Supreme Judges, swore to uphold the Constitution. NONE of them.
