Mike Huckabee, the Republican presidential candidate and former Southern Baptist minister, is getting help from Tim LaHaye, the Christian conservative organizer and co-author of the apocalyptic “Left Behind” novels. “America and our Judeo-Christian heritage are under attack by a force that is more destructive than any America has faced” since Hitler, Dr. LaHaye and his wife, Beverly, wrote in letters sent to lists of conservative Christians in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. “Defeating the radical jihadists will require renewed resolve and spiritual rearmament by the evangelical pastors in America.”[..] This can hardly be described as a positive development, though I’m not sure how much direct effect the LaHayes will have. Voters don’t typically look to novelists for political guidance (even if LaHaye’s been a conservative activist for decades), and the CWA is one of those aging, increasingly irrelevant groups of social conservatives. LaHaye figures prominently in a book I have just started reading, Craig Unger's The Fall of the House of Bush: The Untold Story of How a Band of True Believers Seized the Executive Branch, Started the Iraq War, and Still Imperils America's Future. The book makes LaHaye look like a real nut job. Unger correctly describes his views as genocidal. The fact that the mass murder would be at God's hands doesn't make it any less bad, in my opinion.
He is, and a greedy one too. When my late aunt first moved to San Diego, she attended the church he pastored. LaHaye embraced the success of his books with real gusto; changing his lifestyle (and ego) to match his new income. Although my aunt believed the rapture to just be one theory, and that no one but the Father knows, this belief is now an entire movement that has taken on a life of its own. The believers seem to think their end times philosophy needs their active help to make it happen. Very dangerous and delusional. This is not a plus for Huckabee's campaign in the long term.

My Baptist maternal gr-grandfather was a Mason (b. 1861 in MO), and he was very religious. My uncle was/is a Mason and not at all religious. I'm not sure if there was/is a relationship, but I can believe Masons are being used in some way. SShhhhh! It's all secret!

I'm a Catholic, and so a member of a church that condemns the Masons. But, to be fair, weren't most of the Founding Fathers Masons?
