WASHINGTON - The public increasingly believes the U.S. is making military progress in Iraq but still wants President Bush to remove American troops from the country as quickly as possible, a poll showed Tuesday.

People are evenly split over how well the military effort in Iraq is going, with 48 percent saying it is going well and the same number saying it isn't, according to a survey by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. In February, shortly after Bush announced he would send additional troops to the country, only 30 percent said things were going well.

Stark partisan divisions remain, though even growing numbers of Democrats cite gains. While 16 percent of Democrats said in February that things were going well, that figure has grown to 33 percent — less than half the 74 percent of Republicans who felt that way.

Overall, 43 percent said the U.S. is making gains against the insurgents, up 13 percentage points from February. The percentage of people seeing progress reducing civilian casualties has more than doubled to 43 percent, while the number seeing results in preventing civil war is 32 percent, almost double the February level.

There have been smaller increases in the number of people citing progress in preventing terrorist bases, rebuilding Iraqi public works and establishing democracy.

Even so, 54 percent say they favor bringing the troops home as soon as possible, virtually the same number as in February.

The public remains split over whether the U.S. will succeed or fail in Iraq, just as in February. A small majority feels the U.S. is losing ground in getting Iraqi leaders to work together.

The poll involved telephone interviews with 1,399 adults from Nov. 20-26. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Either the Pew poll questions encourage positive feedback or people stateside have lost their friggin' minds - turkey OD killing brain cells or what?

the Pew poll questions encourage positive feedback

That is the answer, of course. Which is why polls are such a joke.

Uh huh. They are only a joke when they don't confirm the Paultards preconceived notion that George Bush is Satan in the flesh and Ron Paul is actually the second coming of Jesus Christ.

You BDS sufferers want more than anything for Bush to suffer an embarrassment over Iraq and can't stand the idea we may actually succeed.

Well we are succeeding and will continue to do so, so I say eat your heart out, Paultards.

a. For the past year the vast majority of US voters as per the results of various polls viewed the Iraq occupation as being an unmitigated disaster and they wanted the troops out as soon as possible because no good would come of this military misadventure. Indeed, the GOP lost the election in November 2006 over the Iraq War occupation. Public opinion remained unchanged for 10 months.

Even as recently as September as was reported in the USA Today 09/07/07 issue Gallup poll results demonstrated the following:

"While a third of those surveyed say the "surge" of U.S. troops this year has made them more confident the United States will accomplish its goals, a majority calls the invasion a mistake and predicts the war will be lost.

A record 60% say the United States should set a timetable to withdraw forces "and stick to that timetable regardless of what is going on in Iraq."

www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-09-09-poll_N.htm

So therefore to have such a remarkable turn around in public opinion in the course of 2 short months means that there's more than a little fishy with the results of the Pew poll results.

b. Dubya has shown himself to be a national embarressment 24/7 from the getgo - no further proof from Iraq is required.

c. Regarding Dr. Paul, he has received the most support from military over any other Prez candidate. Is this how you view soldiers - referring to them as "paultards?" Nice.

No doubt you consider Iraq surge architect, Neoconwarpig Kaplan, as a "hero." Ha!
