Bob Woodward, Washington Post Clueless About 'Vote Caging'

'Please Send an E-Mail Explaining What Caging Is,' Requests Watergate Investigative Reporter During Online Chat

Echoes Question of Previous WaPo Reporter Who Asked: 'So What Is This Caging Thing?'...

Posted By Brad Friedman On 23rd November 2007 @ 08:47 In Washington Post, Mainstream Media Failure, Voter Registration, Vote Caging | 5 Comments

Apparently, one of the requirements for working as a reporter at the Washington Post is that you must remain as out of touch as possible with anything that matters.

According to ThinkProgress today [1], Watergate's investigative genius, Bob Woodward, smartly meets the requirements...

Earlier this week, Washington Post investigative reporters Bob Woodward and Jeff Leen hosted an online chat [2] at washingtonpost.com. One of the participants asked Woodward and Leen how pervasive the voter suppression tactic known as "caging" is. The investigative reporters had no idea what it was:

Washington, D.C.: Don't you have a duty to report criminal activity to the appropriate authorities?

How pervasive is "caging"?

Bob Woodward and Jeff Leen: We publish what we can find and document. Many times over the years government authorities have pursued the information we have dug up and launched their own investigations. But we're trying to serve the readers, and we do not act as police or prosecutors. And please send us an e-mail explaing [sic] what "caging" is.

Woodward and Leen aren't the only Washington Post reporters who are clueless about caging. In a washingtonpost.com online chat with congressional reporter Jonathan Weisman in May, a questioner asked "why Congress didn't jump on Monica Goodling's testimony about caging." Weisman's response: "So what is this caging thing? [3]"

So for all those Washington Post reporters out there, let's go over the facts again...

Check out TP for those facts [4] (as if you need them), and how you can contact Woodward, and the rest of the clueless WaPo gang to give the poor folks some help on this very very (apparently) obscure topic.

BRAD BLOG's [5] own dozens and dozens of articles --- apparently most of them just too "exclusive" --- on the topic, are posted right here [6] in reverse chronological order.

So why not post a defintion and example of vote caging.

All over the country I have seen examples of local Democrat officials allowing illegal aliens to vote. Miami-Dade allowed 10,000 such people to vote in 2000 which is why they did not support Al Gore's lawsuit. I have also seen local officilas allow Democrats to register and vote twice. These two practices were enough to swing Oregon to Gore in 2000.

In 2000 I wanted to vote for Nader. I had to cast a provisional ballot despite having voted in the previous election. I was taken off the Eugene Oregon voter roles by the Democrats because I was a registered Republican in a poor neighborhood. I lived there while I was studying for exams. I was told by election officials that the Democrats often strike Republicans in poor neighborhoods from voter lists. When told by the local officials in Eugene, they said they do not care that some were discouraged from voting altogether. Is this an example of caged voters?

So why not post a defintion and example of vote caging.

Thirteen Democratic Senators have introduced a bill that would outlaw "voter caging," the practice of sending mail marked "Do Not Forward" to a targeted list of voters in hopes of using the returned mailings as a basis to challenge the right of the voters to vote.

More here with links for your reading pleasure: www.bradblog.com/?p=5248

It's worth your time:

From the proposed legislation:

"The Caging Prohibition Act would prohibit challenges to a person’s eligibility to register to vote, or cast a vote, based solely on returned mail or a caging list. The bill would also mandate that anyone who challenges the right of another citizen to vote must set forth the specific grounds for their alleged ineligibility, under penalty of perjury. "

What is wrong with sending out letters to voters and challenging them at the polls if the post office has reason to believe they have filed a change of address? I am tired of my voted being cancelled by illegal aliens and by people who register and vote twice. We need to hand out ten year minimum sentences to people wsho steal elections.

I am a Republican who has never voted for Bush father or son. As I said before, I voted for NADER in 2000 becasue he was the only anti-war candidate and both the Bush family and AL Gore were members of the Trilateral Commission.

If the POST OFFICE believes?

I'm not sure I'm clear on your point there.

As far as the rest of the voter shenanigans (putting it nicely), I agree with you.

As for voting mistakes, I am guilty of that. I listened to the media and radio heads. The shrillness turned me off, and probably drowned out people with legitimate issues they were screaming to bring awareness to.

That's why we are here now, fighting to save the patient, and the patient is not just us, but humanity itself.

If all voices are drowned by their own grudges, complaints and baggage, then we all stare at freedom in a body bag.

We'd better stop the petty sh*t, and understand the monster that seeks to put us there.

If the former resident move and left a forwarding address, he should vote at the new location. We need to be sure he does not vote twice and that another person does not vote in his place.

I'm with you there, to a degree. When a person files change of address, it should be sent to the voter registration office, to scrub their records. This shouldn't be brain science. Then, when the person establishes their residency in their new location, they should then call for the forms to re-register themselves.

It's a small point to make, but I'd rather the post office not be the decider.

Ever heard of Smedley Butler?

"War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses." -- Major General Smedley Darling Butler (1981-1940) Major General USMC, "Old Gimlet Eye'' and "Hell Devil Darling", most highly decorated military men from the pre-World War II era. Source: from a speech in 1933 http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Smedley..Butler.Quote.C29D

"I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag." -- Major General Smedley Darling Butler (1981-1940) Major General USMC, "Old Gimlet Eye'' and "Hell Devil Darling", most highly decorated military men from the pre-World War II era. Source: from a speech in 1933 http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Smedley..Butler.Quote.5390

"I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket." -- Major General Smedley Darling Butler (1981-1940) Major General USMC, "Old Gimlet Eye'' and "Hell Devil Darling", most highly decorated military men from the pre-World War II era. I live in Eugene, Oregon and know that Oregpn's unique vote by mail system compels verification of the signature on the envelope with that on file from the voter.

They also work to keep up with the fluid population of students. I don't believe caging is occurring here. Eugene, Oregon by nature is extremely liberal and Democratic Party oriented and has been that way in all the years I have been here.

The voter outcome always seems to match well our population demographics.
