This is a planetary nebula. It differs slightly from typical nebulae which are simply clouds of dust and gas which have coalesced.

A planetary nebula remains after the death of a star which has shed its outer layers and may have exploded. Heavy elements come from these phenomena. Astronomers can tell what elements nebulae contain from the colors. Our solar system was very likely formed when a massive star died and formed a planetary nebula. In other words, there used to be a star where Sol (our sun) now resides.

Our sun contains mostly hydrogen which it is fusing into helium, and some heavy elements at its core.

VY Canis Majoris is the largest known star in our galaxy. If placed at the center of our solar system it would extend past the orbit of Jupiter.
