I took a wicked gash in the leg today, above the left knee when an angle grinder slipped from my hand and hit me on the leg. In a split second it cut through my jeans and made a gash about 2 inches long and a half inch deep.

Naturally, I'm too tough for hospitals and stitches, so after I covered it with paper towel and electrical tape (lol) I went to the pharmacy for some butterflies. That's where I found these neat new things.

They are "Doctor's Choice" Skin Closures. They are these cool little strips about 3 inches long. The strips come 5 to a "kit", with 5 kits to the box for $8.99.

You expose the adhesive at one end of the 5 strip kit, and press it down on one side of the cut, them expose the adhesive in the middle, and draw the wound closed, press it down again, and then finally, expose the last end of the strips and press them down. The whole thing gets covered with this special pad.

I did mine at 5:30, then drove a standard transmission truck for an hour and half to get home, and the strips are still firmly in place under the pad, and the wound appears to be tightly closed.

They are amazing really. I think every first aid kit should two or three boxes of these things.

Good to know.

We recently had a guy here who cut his finger while slicing fruit at home. He went to the emergency room. The nurse applied gauze to the cut, told him to hold it for 15 minutes, then she came back and put two Steri-Strips on it and a small bandage, and sent him home.

He got no injections, no medicine, no drugs, no X-rays, no stitches, no doctor.

They sent him a bill for $673.

I've already said too much.

They do have skin glue. Although it's tricky if you are still bleeding. Butterfly bandaids are gold.

Of the $673, $330 was for "facilities services", and the rest, $343, was for services from a "Joseph L. Zammit MD" (consisting of $135 for "emergency services" and $208 for "surgery").

Since the guy didn't even see a doctor, much less get surgery, he thinks he got defrauded. I don't know how it ended up.

He should send them a bill for $50/min for time spent having to administer his own health care in their facilities (negligence on their part?), and tell 'em to take him to court.

I remember the days when such actions were never thought of let alone considered.

The Federal government was some unknown entity that lived in the swamps of MD and VA.

Cost-shifting is definitely a big part of the healthcare problem in the US, and not just with illegals and welfare cases.

The insurance cmpanies also get preferential treatment. If you're uninsured and pay your own bills, the hospitals will charge you 3 to 4 times what they charge the insurance companies. There are a number of lawsuits pending against hospitals for this practice.

Some time ago I did read of a method of stopping the free care.

It involved having the free loader sign an agreement that the government could attach their future earnings to reclaim the lost revenue.

Of course that was shot down by the do gooders at once.

We should have a SHTF first aid ping list.

I like it. When it happens the prepared may live.

To begin with food and water. I would like to see if the Berkey water systems are really the way to go.(Lodwick this is to you cause I think you have one)

Myself, I have I guess enough food to keep the family going for six weeks,( my pantry is pretty well stocked) water I can filter and treat from the stream not far away, guns and ammo got plenty of, tho need to get out and do some shooting to keep in shape.

The batteries and night lites are a source if interest, I bot a well recomended genarator last year and run it softly to break in in, changed the oil and burned all the gas out of it.

It's a 4000 watt Champion that I stole for $289 (yes that's right)and I may never need it. But the day I do it its worth an hundred thousand (maybe)

I like LED flashlights and have a lot of NiHd batteries, they last longer and are better in alot of ways.

Yes I like the idea of a SHTF ping list. I can see there is a lot to share.

Radio communications might be interesting.

When the killer blizzard hit Colorado Springs in (87?) the radio was essential

Just bot a GPS Garmin basic unit. A few months ago wife and I were in the "back of Beyond" reef system of the San Rafael Utah exploring slot canyons.

Well after eight hours of exploring I was interested in getting back to our camp for some food and cold beverages, but we got "misplaced", not quite lost, and at at that point I thought to my self, I would gladly pay $150 for a GPS to shed a little light on which ridge to trudge over to get the the food and beer.

So got one.

Anyway a good idea I think on the SHTF notion. I still have hardly figured out how to use the GPS, but I walk at about 3.7 miles/hour, kinda fast I think. And I know exactly what the elevation is of our house (6239 feet)

A few months ago I burned the back of my right hand pretty bad, had second and third degree burns. It was really painful, and I had to put this white sulfadine cream on it and kept it bandaged for weeks. On the worst areas it burned off a lot of flesh, and I'll have a scar from it. It's an area about 2 by 2 inches by my index and middle fingers. Burns really hurt.

I probably have about a years worth of food, I have cases of beans and about 100 pounds of rice, and of course cases of canned fish.

I'm stockpiling batteries, and have a couple of windup flashlights. I also have a good shortwave radio, that will be a good thing to have too when SHTF.

I need to get a good first aid kit though.

LOL! Sorry, not laughing at your injury but being married to a contractor I can relate. My husband damn near cut his finger off with a battery powered trim saw, duct tape is your friend. Thank God it wasn't the circular saw. He nailed his foot with a two inch stainless among many other accidents.

We should have a SHTF first aid ping list.

I like it. When it happens the prepared may live.

Yeah, I like it too.

Definitely!!! Gravity flow, no power needed, nor water pressure. Take it anywhere, and they REALLY DO WORK! You can add food coloring to the water and after it filters you'll have clear water! Make sure to have extra filters on hand...

I'd recommend a much longer supply, unless you are in a position to be able to produce all your own food needs. Of course, you can always catch a fish, or shoot a deer; but veggies are a different matter. Dry beans, rice, and things that don't require much in the way of prep (canning or freezing) are good. May get old eating beans everyday, but it beats NOT eating. And don't forget about rotating and using canned and frozen items. You probably don't really want to eat something that was canned 5 years ago...

They're kinda nice, but you definitely want to have a "traditional" flashlight too. I heard LEDs can be "cut off" with a jamming signal of some sort. Don't know that to be a fact, but that's what I've heard. Maybe some of the "techies" on here can "shed some light" on it... Incidentally, the same holds true for ANY vehicle which has electronic ignition. Might want to find an old truck or something that runs with points...

Personally, in a real SHTF situation, I'd be chunking that - along with cell phones and anything else trackable...

A good shortwave might be nice too. But my thinking is "what's the difference". I'd just as soon be "holed up" in a spot that I have a decent chance of defending, and ride it out...

Don't forget about books either. Books about natural cures, books that have good pictures to identify plants for medicinal purposes, books that cover "how to" etc. One we really like is Reader's Digest Back To Basics: How to Learn and Enjoy Traditional American Skills It's a VERY GOOD book that teaches self-sufficiency - covering all of life's essentials: shelter, alternative energy sources, growing and preserving food, home crafts, directions for making herbal remedies, and even home-grown entertainment.

You're right though with the statement the "prepared MAY live"... The unprepared are gonna have a VERY ROUGH go...

America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards. On the road to tyranny, we've gone so far that polite political action is about as useless as a miniskirt in a convent.
