White House: Contempt citations futile Published: Dec. 13, 2007 at 6:06 PM WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. Senate Democrats should know issuing contempt citations and pursuing a criminal case in the firings of U.S. attorneys is futile, the White House said. Dana Perino, White House press secretary, said Thursday the Senate Judiciary Committee's issuing contempt citations against former White House adviser Karl Rove and White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten is pointless because "the constitutional prerogative of the president would make it a futile effort for Congress to refer contempt citations to U.S. attorneys." The committee issued citations because Bolten did not provide information or documents in the firing of nine U.S. attorneys. Rove, who resigned as deputy chief of staff in August, was cited because he did not appear before the committee to testify. The White House said Rove was immune because of executive privilege. "The Department of Justice would not require a U.S. attorney to convene a grand jury or otherwise pursue a prosecution of an individual who carries out a president's instruction not to provide documents or testimony on the basis of the president's assertion of executive privilege," Perino said. The matter will go before the full Senate.

Congress has the power, but the contempt citations are just political grandstanding. Congress could tell the president, "You have 30 days to press charges to the full extent of the law and if you don't, you will be impeached, removed from office, and charged with contempt of congress." And, then do it. If some Federal Judge attempted to get involved, congress could impeach him. That would send a VERY STRONG MESSAGE to any future president or Federal Judge.
Well they are with this pack of lapdogs in congress. The senate should call the master-at-arms to go arrest those two bastards and lock them in the holding cell in the basement of the capitol. What they'll actually do is dither and diddle around endlessly.

I stole it from Ed Schultz this afternoon. Even the lefty talk-show hosts are pissed at this cowardly congress. He mentioned, among other things, that they could just let funding bills die without ever bringing them up for a vote. Jenk Uygur from the Young Turks suggested that the Dems grow a pair and demand that the Repubs follow through with their filibuster threats every time--"Okay, you're gonna filibuster? Go ahead. We'll see you in the morning. Or maybe next week. Whenever you're tired of talking." The Dems should've been learning all the Republican dirty tricks over the last 7 years, but instead of biding their time and storing their bile, they're still trying to "go along and get along". Fuck, did Pelosi learn her negotiating skills from Carter?
