Hard Cider: The Good News Is That The USA's Top Spook Uses A Mac. The Bad News ... He Got Caught!
Hard Cider Index
For those of you that follow the news daily, you may have heard of the, alleged, Wen Ho Lee spy scandal, which involves a Taiwan-born naturalized U.S. citizen that worked for the weapons section of the Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratories in New Mexico. He is accused of spying for the government of China. The main charge against him is the fact that he had, against regulations, downloaded a lot of classified information to his personal (unsecure) computer. A 60 Minutes feature on the issue raised a lot of doublts about the case against him and said that high government officials had themselved illegally downloaded classified material to their personal or home computers. In fact, said 60 Minutes, the former head of the CIA, John Deutch, had been reprimanded for doing the same as Wen Ho Lee, that is downloading reams of classified documents to his personal computer at home.
So while Wen Ho Lee was being charged for this offense, is facing years in prison and has had a 1 million bail bond placed on his head, John Deutch got a mild pat on the wrist asking him please to not do it again.
Well some groups are making a stink about this calling it a double standard and putting pressure on Congress.
When a bit of the fabric of hypocrisy that envelopes Washington DC gets unraveled, congressmen do what they always do in such situations - they huff and puff and preen - and of course hold hearings, so that the rest of the nation can see what important work they are doing keeping us safe. (Don't worry I am getting to the Mac connection)
So Mr Deutch has been the subject of Senate hearings and they have been prying a little deeper into the "Deutsch Affair". And apparently, according to a Time Magazine report, Mr Deutsch, former head of the CIA was illegally downloading all those classified documents to his family's Macintosh computer! (Which type of Mac was not specified, but we think that on his salary he could afford the best).
The article goes on to say that not only did he have classified documents on his computer but that he used the same computer for personal email, receiving a note from a former Russian citizen living in Western Europe and that Deutch family members also surfed the Web on it, one visiting porn sites (bet that got the kid grounded).
The conclusion: The former head of the CIA certainly knows quality computers, and expect enough huffing and puffing on Capitol Hill to lower the heating bill for about a week or so.
