Composting toilets are actually pretty cool. Bacteria and heat breaks everything down -- including garbage -- into humus. It makes great fertiziler, and makes for a hell of a flower garden, with roses the size of your head! (1 image)

My hubby and I luv our composting throne. We use it to save water..thereby saving electricity as our wind/solar energy system runs the pump.

I figure society and the economy are going to only get worse. More to a rural area, build a small house with a well and a composting toilet, grow a little bit of food, do a little hunting and fishing...it's a lot better than being stuck in the cities.

I agree. We live on a small farm, and we are growing more of our food every year It's a long learning process to leave the habits of a lifetime. I hope it will help us survive the times to come.

I thought you lived in a tree stump? It is strange that society takes several gallons of clean water to dispose of fourteen ounces of urine, so now we have several gallons of contaminated water.

Personal note - I had a deck that was over a gravel (pea gravel no less) walkway. Partly out of contempt for humanity and to see how long it would take before there was any trace of an small, I peeded in the same spot for two years. I could never detect any odor. And saved thousands of gallons of water.

Stewart Brand of the Whole Earth Catalog fame claimed he pooped in a in a can or something and deposited it onto to his flat roof in California. After a year the ashes could be held in a shoebox, he claimed.

Well I don't know about a whole neighborhood doing that, and in Seattle their would be problems, but it seem to show that what might have been a good idea for a small population is stupid for the quantity of humans we now have.

I've toured Mike Renold's Earthship houses in Taos several time and tho its not a solution for all, they are quite interesting. I am always surprised at how stick houses use massive insulation imported from New Jersey, when the good earth is all around.

Straw bale houses are great too, several demonstration houses are here in Colorado Springs.

I peeded in the same spot for two years.

When I was at home, and in college, the neighbor's yappy little dog kept coming onto our property and causing trouble. So, one night, I went and peed a line among our property line.

The dog never crossed it.

Urine seems to have a lot of unusual properties.

Mine doesn't tho.
