Fox praises 'Christmas in Fallujah' anti-war song

Singer Cass Dillion appeared on a special Fox & Friends online segment to perform the song "Christmas in Fallujah," which Billy Joel wrote based on phrases from soldiers' letters.

"It's a little controversial," suggested the Fox hosts, pointing to lines like "we came with the Crusaders" and "we are the Legionnaires of Rome." "That's exactly how [the soldiers] felt," Dillon replied. After Dillon left the stage, the hosts concluded the song was really about "how can we show the troops our expressions of affection."

Billy Joel himself told Rolling Stone, when asked if "Christmas in Fallujah" was an anti-war song, "People can take it anyway they want. I don't get up on a soapbox and do political messages. I believe in talking about the human being, and the conditions humans find themselves in."

Iraq and Afghanistan Veteran's of America President Paul Rieckhoff has written the following:

"Christmas in Fallujah" is based on letters he received from troops serving in the combat zone. The song is powerful and important. And while I don't necessarily agree with every line of it, I like it a lot. It reminds me of the Christmas I spent in Baghdad in 2003. And I think the song will go a long way toward connecting Americans to the war raging halfway around the globe this holiday season. It is also sure to ruffle some peoples' feathers -- and probably piss off Bill O'Reilly.

Joel gave the song to a virtually unknown 21-year-old singer named Cass Dillon -- a guy he chose because he wanted a singer the age of many of the troops in Iraq. And he made a damn good pick.
