Two weeks after being acquitted of criminal mischief charges, the anti-Iraq war group calling itself the Seriously P.O.'d Grannies returned Friday to the same sidewalk outside a Northeast Portland U.S. military recruiting center where they were arrested in April.

On Good Friday, a half a dozen members of the group were busted after using washable red finger paint to leave handprints on a front window. But a Multnomah County jury found no problem with the protest, even though a judge cited them for leaving graffiti.

Joseph Rose of The Oregonian was outside the recruiting station as the grannies -- and a few grandpas -- made their return. Marine and Army recruiters inside the office declined to be interviewed. Portland police were called, but decided not to arrest the grannies this time. Follow this link to read The Oregonian's coverage of the grannies' recent trial.

I guess they have nothing better to do than to waste their time protesting something that is not going to change.

"I guess they have nothing better to do than to waste their time protesting something that is not going to change."

It's no waste of time to protest illegal and immoral wars started by war criminals like Bush and Cheney. I've been at protests with these ladies and I consider a couple of them personal friends.

They are smart, and they really care. We all need to be doing exactly what they are doing. And this war not ony needs ending, but investigations and trials need to take place, and the Hague is where Bush, Cheney, Rumbo and others need to be for war crime trials.

In this day and age protests don't accomplish anything.

There have been protests all over the world since before the Iraq war began and nothing has changed as a result.

This ain't the 60's.

What have 5 years of Iraq war protesting accomplished?

"In this day and age protests don't accomplish anything."

Bullshit. Dissent has given this country a great deal and is a civic responsibility in the face of crimes and injustice.

Your old saw here has been said for hundreds of years, that dissent is old hat. That spin has never stopped people from forfilling their civic duty, and it never will.

In fact, it is precisely because of the fear of dissent that this fascist administration won't try for a draft, because they know that would be gasoline on the fire.

I expect to see the neocon warmaking policies to generate much heat on the streets this election year, and I plan on being right there when it happens.

I do counter-recruiting at high schools for Oregon Peaceworks which I as a veteran of Bush warmaking and a long time local actovist I am quite good at, and I am a volunteer working the phones doing fund raising for them. So your words mean less then nothing to me on this topic.

In fact I plan on doing non-violent civil disobedience this season regarding the war. Something that is my duty to do.

I didn't say dissent hasn't accomplished anything.

5 years of street protests over the Iraq war have not accomplished anything.

"What have 5 years of Iraq war protesting accomplished?"

What has five years of war accomplished? It has ruined our reputastion in the world, killed and maimed incredible numbers of people destroying their lifes and the fabric of their countries and culture, it has strained our finances and made the world far less safe.

Dumb question for you to ask.

Obviously it's a difficult question for you to ponder.

Oh, and don't make the mistake of equating my statements about the futility of protesting with support for the war.

Not at all dear boy. It is elegantly easy to answer. As far as your support of the war, I consider you a hawk and a war enabler. And an apologist for war criminals.

Well, considering that there is not a single post of mine supporting the war or the Bush administration, you're even dumber than you appear.

But none of that changes the fact that 5 years of Iraq war protests have not done a damn thing.

Protests raise the level of awareness among the sheeple. Some even gain enough knowledge and power to leave the herd.

Protests didn't turn people against the Iraq war, the daily violence over there did.

But the daily violence is not reported much, and when it is, it is done with some sort of propaganda.

The protests bring the evils of the war into focus, makes the sheeple stop and think for a second. It even encourages some of them to get involved also.

You work here as an an enabler of the war. I would be dumb not to notice that.

You also don't pay attention to the clear and compelling evidence that the official story regarding 9-11 is full of holes and that this administration is responsible for these false flag opperations.

I feel you may be adopting some positions to try to gain some credibility. You know that 9-11 is a bigger fish to fry and a problem for this administration, and focus on defending the Bush administration here, at the expense of being able to say how you truly feel about the war.

I don't seriously believe that you are telling the truth regarding your stand on the war. I would be dumb if I bought that you are anti-war.

The violence has been reported enough to cause people to turn against the war and see it as a mistake. It wasn't propaganda, if anything, the violence was underreported.

The only people who pay attention to street protests are fellow protesters. The fact that the big protests are usually filled with every fringe group with an agenda only marginalizes the protest and muddles the message.

You are dumb to think that without any support for that position.

When it comes to the Iraq war, I'm apathetic. It doesn't effect my life therefore I don't give a shit and I posted my position on the war months ago. Search through my posts and you'll find very few and of those, none are supportive of Bush or the war.

Some of you people have problems with jumping to conclusions for no good reason.

Fox News isn't the only network around and even they had to report on the violence in Iraq.

Daily killings and bombings is what soured people on the war, not some guy dressed up as Bush holding a globe walking down the street.

Fox News is what's holding the 30% who still support the war. They, like you, consider war protests a futility of effort by a few fringe elements.

Yet, the crowds at war protests show very ordinary looking Americans who decided to do something, however small, to make their position on the war be known.

"It doesn't effect my life therefore I don't give a shit..."

You mean, you willfully blind yourself to how it effects your life, chum.

Oppression and injustice anywhere has an effect on everything else. One thing I do know and know well; we do not life in a vacuum.

You are right about one thing here, you don't give a shit, about anything but your own fat rump.

You should grow up and start to expand your horizons in that regard.

"Some of you people have problems with jumping to conclusions for no good reason."

You never open your eyes to clear and compelling evidence if it endangers your existance in your little bubble, and it bothers the hell out of you when others are not so self serving and myopic in nature.

You obviously haven't seen the photos or watched the videos of the war protests.

I was at a small protest at Fashion Island in Newport Beach recently, because Donald Rumsfeld was at a local hotel to receive an award. We were an ordinary looking group holding signs like "Who would Jesus Torture?". A mother of a young man in Iraq was holding two signs. She belongs to an organization for military families against the war.

I'm sure you feel good about having been there but that's about all that the various protests accomplish; making the participants feel good about themselves.

Several motorists stopped and asked why we were standing in front of the hotel. They had no idea Donald Rumsfeld was there. They were very supportive.

Fashion Island was packed with early Christmas shoppers, only two passing motorists were negative, there were many friendly, supportive horn honks.

Also, the attendees honoring the war criminal got a good earful of what we thought of them. And two local papers had articles because we were there.
