I'm sure that they are cousins - Columbus, and other explorers brought them to the New World and they spread everywhere. The Fino's gait is what's so fascinating to me.

YouTube has the 2007 Colombian Championship video, which is totally unbelievable.

The Peruvian Paso's gait is said to be very smooth and they can continue that way all day. I remember seeing some in SoCal years ago, seemed very exotic at the time. My gr-aunt had a Tennessee Walking horse, which has a smooth fast natural gait also (but very different from the paso).
