WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Five Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, CNN reported.

The CNN report on Monday, citing unidentified U.S. officials, said the Iranian vessels came within 200 yards (meters) of the U.S. ships and that after a threatening radio communication, U.S. sailors manned their ships' guns and were very close to opening fire.

I heard this news on the radio at the top of the hour. They said the Iranian vessels dumped floating boxes in the path of the US vessels.

There seem to be differing accounts about what happened.

Five Iranian speedboats swarmed three US navy ships as they transited the strategic Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, radioing a threat to blow them up, a Pentagon official said Monday.

"I'm coming at you and you will blow up in a couple of minutes," the official quoted the radio transmission as saying.

Pentagon discloses near Iranian-US Navy shooting incident in Strait of Hormuz Sunday

January 7, 2008, 5:06 PM (GMT+02:00)

US officials report that five Iranian Revolutionary Guards boats harassed and provoked three US Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz early Sunday, Jan. 6. They turned away just before the US captain gave the order to open fire.

The incident occurred shortly before President George W. Bush was due for a tour of the region, including the Gulf emirates and Saudi Arabia. “It was the most serious provocation of this sort that we’ve seen yet,” said the US official.

As a US Navy cruiser, destroyer and frigate were transiting the strategic strait on their way into the Persian Gulf, “Five small boats were acting in a very aggressive way, charging the ships, dropping boxes in the water in front of the ships and causing them to take evasive maneuvers,” according to the Pentagon official. “There were no injuries. But there could have been.”

The Iranian boats came as close as 200 yards to one of the US ships before turning away “literally at the very moment that the US force was preparing to open fire.”

The US official said the Iranians radioed something to the effect that “we’re coming at you and you’ll explode in a couple of minutes.”

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for international oil shipments out of the Persian Gulf.

This isn't going to help Hillary in the Democratic primaries.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

Debka seems to know more about it than anyone, so I have to assume these were Israelis.

Whenever there is mischief-making in that area of the world, it is a pretty safe assumption that the Israelis and/or their neocon and/or their phony hired Arab compatriots are behind it.

When I was in Israel, we toured through Druze villages in the Galilee. These are Arabs who are not quite Muslims anymore and can be hired to impersonate genuine Muslim Arabs on behalf of the Zionist cause.

What will these Muslim militarists think of next ? First, it was Palestinian rocks being leveled at tanks and now these blasted Iranian boxes being floated at our ships.

Stocks Move Lower After White House Warns Iran About Provocation in the Strait of Hormuz

NEW YORK (AP) -- Wall Street pulled back Monday after the Bush administration warned Iran following an incident involving that country's forces and three U.S. Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Stocks had opened higher amid speculation about future interest rate cuts but turned lower after reports of the administration's comments appeared on news services.

U.S. forces were on the verge of firing on the Iranian boats in the early Sunday incident, when the boats turned and moved away, a Pentagon official said. The White House on Monday warned it "will confront Iranian behavior" if it threatens the U.S. or its allies.

Concerns about fresh tensions in the Middle East was enough to spook investors on a day with few substantive economic or corporate events. Investors had originally sent stocks higher amid speculation the Federal Reserve will continue its campaign of interest rate cuts to ward off a recession.

Reports on jobs and manufacturing elevated concerns about a recession, and that has turned Wall Street's attention to the Fed's Jan. 29-30 rate-setting meeting. Some clues about the central bank's stance might come when Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke gives a speech on Thursday.

Wise words from Iran -

Iran-Syria-Larijani

Supreme Leader's representative in Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani said on Sunday that treats made by US President George W Bush against Iran is similar to the cries of worried aged women who create commotion to cover their fears.

Speaking to reporters, he said such threats lack fundamental basis and the Americans have only portrayed an image of trouble-maker for themselves.

Those who believe in US unilateralism should go through their records to judge their deeds in Iraq and Lebanon, he pointed out.

On recent moves by Washington to create rift in strategic relations between Iran and Syria, he said "We cannot stop imagination of peoples, let them have these imaginations but the future will show the realities as they stand." Iran and Syria are determined to maintain durable peace and stability in the region, Larijani said.

During his stay in Damascus, Larijani conferred with high ranking Syrian officials on expansion of mutual relations as well as regional and international developments.

Iran and Syria have positive approach in dealing with political, economic and security affairs in Iraq, he said adding that the two sides have common stance on support for democratic Iraqi government.

On recent developments in Palestine, he said both Tehran and Damascus believe in unity among various political wings in Palestine.

The more unified Palestinian nations, the chance for regaining their rights would be high, Larijani said.
