Musharraf: "We Are Not Looking" for Bin Laden By Noah Shachtman EmailJanuary 07, 2008 | 7:12:30 PMCategories: Perils of Pakistan, War Update

Pervez_musharraf_india_ipe_20060109 The U.S. has dropped $10 billion into Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf's lap -- much of it in cash. Allegedly, that's to fight the jihadists in his country and across his border. But, somehow, that mission does not involve hunting for Osama bin Laden.

Musharraf, in response to a 60 Minutes question about bin Laden, said, "We are not particularly looking for him, but we are operating against terrorists and Al Qaeda and militant Taliban. And in the process, obviously, combined, maybe we are looking for him also."

But how seriously is he taking that larger fight, really? Despite a number of high-profile bombings in his country, Musharraf said he couldn't "say for sure" whether groups like the Taliban were "regrouping" or "getting stronger."

But the worst part of the interview may have been when Musharraf was asked who was to blame for Benazir Bhutto's assassination. Musharraf replied, "Only she."

Kee-riiist. So much for our most trusted ally in the war on terror.

I guess it's some small consolation that he didn't whip out the laser gun assassination theory.

Well, at least they're being smart about it. Bin Laden is more of a prize than anything. There's much more active and 'smarter' terrorist leaders out there.

$10B of taxpayers' hard-earned dosh for nothing. Instead Pakistan is messier than before, and the terrorists are having a laugh.

American voters are paying the price of voting for such a smart administration.

Unfortunately when it comes to Bhuttos death he really is right. She knrew there were death threats and at least one attempt since she landed in Pakistan. Yet at the time of her shooting she was standing up out the sunroof of her protective vehicle.

Doesnt do too much good to have a bullet proof car if you stick your head out the sunroof does it?

@Wow: American voters are paying the price of voting for such a smart administration. . The truth of the matter is that there aren't really any good options when it comes to Pakistan. Not even the foreign policy genius of Obama/Hillary/Edwards would have an easy time of it, especially when Obama wants to invade Pakistan to get Bin Laden.

Maybe you can attribute that quote to his lack of a good grasp of the English language... one can only hope...

Uhhh 10 billion? Do you people have any idea how much money that really is? Do you?

That's 10 packs of a 1000 million dollars. The largest U.S. bill in circulation is the hundred dollar bill, and it takes 10,000 of those to make one million dollars. Ten thousand bills! That is the smallest size you can get a million dollars in cash. roughly 20 pounds per million or 1000 Tons of cash in hundreds = 10 billion... There are 303,191,185 or so people here in the US. you do the math. Now you tell me why anyone from our country would hand over that kind of cash? to anyone not in the US. IMPEACH! Vote: Ron Paul.

Remember when Bush was campaigning in 2000, and a reporter in Boston asked him to name the presidents of various countries, and he could hardly name one? Pakistan: "that dictator guy."
