I could have bought an AR-15 for $600 a couple weeks ago, but really feel like I should get a secure gun cabinet before doing anything like that, and probably a home security system. Since I spend half my waking life at work, it just seems easier to not keep an AR-15 next to my bed, I'm hoping if anyone ever decides to break into my house the 1/4 Siamese cat will sing for them, making their blood run cold.

What a post to try and address - goodness.

First, if looking for a weapon, go to the local classified ads for distressed sellers who are willing to discount for CASH. You can also check in with www.thehighroad.org for local sellers of all sorts of goodies.

The cat? No comment.

Good luck with it all.

Is $600 too much to pay for an AR-15? I remember remarking how something like that would put the fear of God into burglars, but once I got back to RP table was reminded that if I shot off something like in my neighborhood that it would go through four or five houses.

If you're looking to defend against burgulars & thieves, a 12 gauge shotgun is the choice. However it won't do much against the kind who wear state supplied body armor.

In my particular situation, I think a .22 semi-auto rifle that holds ten or so rounds in the chamber would be a better choice. A few of my friends were extolling the range of the .22 round, but I'm not looking for distance, I'm only wanting to stop burglars and the occasional vandal.

A .22LR or even a .22 magnum won't achieve your objective.

AR15s are .223 longer cartridge, much higher velocity but not an in-home defense weapon

Six or seven good shots wouldn't stop your average punk criminal? Life isn't a Bronson movie, very few of them will be hopped up on PCP.

Esso, the graphic was huge and threw off the lines and there was a side to side to scroll bar. you didn't see that? what browser are you using? i'm using maxthon IE.

The OS my box uses is a version of Windows CE, I guess the browser is a version of MSIE. The screen auto-sizes so I couldn't see what was happening without manually resizing the page.
