US warplanes pound Baghdad

Thu, 10 Jan 2008 12:51:32

US jet fighters have launched a massive air offensive on parts of Baghdad, hitting nearly 40 targets in the war-torn Iraqi capital.

US warplanes dropped 40,000 pounds of bombs on more than 40 targets on Baghdad's southern outskirts, the military said in a statement.

The US Air Force dispatched two B-1 bombers and four F-16 fighter jets, aiming at three large target areas in Arab Jabour.

The statement allegedly said that the strike had been on al Qaeda targets. It gave no details of casualties.

we're bombing them from the air 5 years after we liberated them.

it means we don't really control Baghdad even.

B-1's bombing Baghdad? You'd think this was 2003.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

With B-1's involved, I don't think we're talking about surgical strikes. And on Baghdad, no less.

I wonder what part(s) of Baghdad. Sadr City, maybe?

So much for previous U.S. claims that Al Qaeda in Iraq has been destroyed.

you know they'll tell us that they were 'surgical' strikes. and I'm sure they tried to make it so. and their technology can be awesome. But even with all that, bombing from the air means killing innocent people. Because the targets could be incorrect. and innocent people are always nearby.

Baghdad metro area has about 5 million people. Imagine living in a metro area like that and the government bombs parts of the city.

Did we ever bomb Saigon during the Vietnam War?

no, we never bombed Saigon in the Vietnam War. The enemy was capable of putting small teams of men into Saigon and having them do small attacks, like the time about 10 VC invaded the US Embassy compound, but did not get into the embassy building, and were killed in 10 hours' time. but we never bombed Saigon.

it means we don't really control Baghdad even.

It does not help the talking heads propagate the idea that the "surge" is working. If airstrikes are needed to root out insurgents, then said insurgents are much stronger or in much greater numbers the DC claims.

Maybe the Mexican Air Force could put a few rockets into Washington. That way we could invade them and take their oil.

How come we cant get anyone to pound Washington?

maybe we should cease all efforts to take over the US government and instead just take over the CIA. then we could direct the CIA to start a sectarian war between the republicans and the democrats using undercover operatives. then we could just let them blow each other up.
