Notice the roads, cultivated fields, communal society and the food storage structures. All indicative of a high level of civilization.

Are these savages?

No.

One hundred years later or less, after the devastation caused by the plagues brought by the Europeans, all this was destroyed, and they were reduced to what appeared to be savagery.

It was mass starvation in reality.

did they sacrifice their own children to the chief?

They offer their first-born son to the chief. On the day of the sacrifice, the chief goes to the place dedicated to that purpose. There he takes his seat on a bench. Not far off is a tree stump about two feet high and as many thick, in front of which the mother of the first-born son squats on her heels, her face covered with her hands in sorrow. One of her women friends or relatives then offers the child to the chief in worship. After the offering is made the women who have accompanied the mother dance in a circle around the stump with great demonstrations of joy. In their midst, singing the chief's praises, dances the woman who holds the child. Near by stands a group of six Indians. They surround a magnificently decorated man holding a club. It is he who will perform the sacrifice. When the dance ends, he takes the infant and kills it on the wooden stump in honor of the chief. I saw this ritual performed once while I was there. Notice the Sun worship. Typical really. Child sacrifice was pretty normal as far as I can tell in many cultures, esp the US of A in the 2000's.

You have to give G-d your most valuable possession, and that would be your child. Seems the OT had a story similar, but stopped it.

One might assume that child sacrifice was demanded by the Hebrews in most ancient of times and the story of G-d forbidding it was a way for some enlightened scribes to try to stop it.

This is me talking I have no evidence of that, I don't think anyone else does to the contrary tho. Just fits.

O those guys.

And one might have suspected that child sacrifice may have been a common element of religious ritual for a long time in early human history.

Any ideas why?

Of that I have no doubt, just as canablism was also common for many reasons.

Bate away, I have nothing to hide.

The purpose of human sacrifice is to keep away the bad, bad monster so it won't eat the good guys. It has to be fed.

We even do it today, even though we call it war. Got to human sacrifice our soldiers so the bad, bad Islamofascist monsters (all several hundred of them) won't destroy our sacred culture!

A liberal would rather see a woman raped and strangled with her own pantyhouse than defend herself with a handgun.

Worship is a compound word misunderstood by many. It's "worth" and "ship" ... transfer value. Americans worship the government because they "sacrifice" their property (like the child in the picture) in the form of money etc., to their deity ... government, church etc. Americans also sacrifice their children ... in wars ... but it's all the same really.

yes, indeed. There is a difference between religions and the study of ancient texts. Priests are those wanting governmental power and authority. Usually they are primary or secondary governmental figures throughout history. They are murderers and thieves in most instances. We are dopes in most instances.

Abraham and Issac

The astonishing story of Abraham and Issac puzzled me for many early years of my pilgrimage ....... until I came to see it as a thinly veiled prophesy of God's sacrifice of his Son that was to come.

All we need now is Mitt Romney and the rest of his "Church of Latter Day Saints" cult to tell us that the people in the woodcuts are really one of the lost tribes of Israel.

“A Younge Gentill Woeman Doughter of Secota.” Theodor de Bry’s engraving of a young American Indian woman, published in Thomas Hariot’s 1588 book A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia. In the foreground, the woman is depicted from both the front and back. Her hair is tied back and her arms and legs are painted or tattooed. She is bare-chested and wears a necklace and a fringed skirt. In the background is a body of water in which ducks are swimming, and people in a canoe appear to be fishing in a weir.

The text accompanying the image reads:

Virgins of good parentage are apparelled altogether like the women of Secota above mentioned, saving that they wear hanging about their necks instead of a chain certain thick, and round pearls, with little beads of copper, or polished bones between them. They pounce [tattoo] their foreheads, cheeks, arms and legs. Their hair is cut with two ridges above their foreheads, the rest is trussed up on a knot behind, they have broad mouths, reasonable fair black eyes: they lay their hands often upon their Shoulders, and cover their breasts in token of maiden-like modesty. The rest of their bodies are naked, as in the picture is to be seen. They delight also in seeing fish taken in the rivers.

Theodor de Bry was a Flemish-born engraver and publisher who based his illustrations for Hariot’s book on the New World paintings of colonist John White. These depictions of the landscapes and residents of North Carolina provided Europeans with some of their earliest notions of what the North American continent looked like. This engraving was based on White’s watercolor painting, “Indian Woman.”

that's exactly what it was. and the location of this event per the bible is in some mountains and Jerusalem was later founded in that location. Some believe that the very spot where Abraham & Isaac were is the spot where jesus was crucified.

in the Old Testament there is much mention of animal sacrifices to god. and there are admonishments not to sacrifice your children to other gods such as Molech. but if you read prophecy & take it seriously, then it appears that before the Kingdom of Heaven can be built here on earth there is to be massive trouble among the people here on earth. It seems possibly that god's favorite nation is to be sacrificed.

the bible ridicules our fear of death and tells us that it is the life everlasting that is important, not the life we know here.

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Yes, blood sacrifices were part of many religions. Part of the reason C. S Lewis referred to them as shadow religions of the one true faith.
