A Chinese attack submarine and destroyer confronted the U.S. carrier Kitty Hawk and its battle group in the Taiwan Strait, sparking a tense 28-hour standoff that brought both sides to a battle-ready position.

The American ships were heading to Japan following China’s sudden cancellation of a scheduled Thanksgiving port call in Hong Kong when they encountered the Chinese vessels, according to the Navy Times, which cited a report in a Chinese-language newspaper in Taiwan.

The Times reported that the encounter caused the carrier group “to halt and ready for battle, as the Chinese vessels also stopped amid the 28-hour confrontation.”

The encounter ended without incident, however, and the U.S. ships continued on to Japan. The two Chinese vessels were also headed for a port call in Japan.

The Chinese destroyer, Shenzhen, is armed with anti-ship missiles, while the Song-class attack sub is equipped with anti-ship missiles and a variety of torpedoes.

China has expressed “grave concern” to the U.S. over the Kitty Hawk’s transit through the Taiwan Strait, the Times notes. Beijing claims Taiwan is Chinese territory.

But Admiral Timothy Keating, head of the U.S. Pacific Command, told reporters Tuesday: “We don’t need China’s permission to go through the Taiwan Strait. We will exercise our free right of passage whenever and wherever we choose.”

Shortly before the Kitty Hawk battle group was denied entry to Hong Kong, China had refused safe harbor for two U.S. Navy minesweepers seeking refuge from a storm.

As Newsmax has reported, some U.S. politicians have rung alarm bells about China's increased military spending and technological revamping of its armed forces.

China’s military budget had an average annual growth rate of nearly 16 percent from 1994 to 2004, and China's reported 2006 military budget is about $35 billion, according to Beijing.

But Pentagon sources have said these numbers fail to demonstrate the true scope of the growth, and the real 2006 figure could be as much as $105 billion.

In recent years China has upgraded its nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles; bought state-of-the-art warships, fighter planes and submarines from Russia; and begun development of a number of so-called "asymmetrical" weapons, including informational warfare and anti-satellite systems.

In November, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda warned that China’s continuing military buildup could eventually pose a “major threat” if the Chinese government decides to exercise its power. Subscribe to *Resource Warfare*

Gee, guess I better start soiling myself since China's military expenditures seem to still be over five times less than ours. Maybe they'll keep increasing their budget and we'll only spend more than the next 11 countries combined instead of the next 12 combined.

I wonder what percentage of their GDP that number is, since there are calls that our military budget needs to be 4% of GDP.

They can do it anytime they want to do it.

They can't do anything to us. The U.S. and China are joined at the hip economically. They do anything economically to us and they destroy themselves. We can survive it a lot better than they can.

I disagree. They have already beaten us,

Yes, they would sting themselves by using economics to destroy us. Their losses would be short term, because although we might be an important customer (Read: debtor), we aren't their only customer.

We would be destroyed.

When they believe the time is right, I see them doing that.

You are correct. The Chinese are the chess players here. Us Americans are real checker players into instant gratification. The Chinese know how to plan and wait better then we seem to be able to, or want to this necessary to succeed activity.

The Chinese are a stoic, inscrutable people.

One time Kruschev was lording Russias nuclear capability over Mao.

Mao replied, you may kill 500 million Chinese but another 500 million will be coming for you.

Kruschev had no further bluster.

What shaky foundations our empire are built on.

I don't myself consider it to be 'our' empire. IMHO it belongs to the people who rule us, not us.

also, their military budget the article says is something like $105 billion, ours is $550 billion before the extra funding for the war, something near $800 billion after the war funding. but dollar spent in china go far far further than dollar spent here due to our extreme costliness. speaking of costliness, here is a bible verse.

"Revelation 18:19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate."

between the 1'st pres bush & clinton they made an agreement with china to set their currency artificially inexpensive to ours' and ours artificially expensive to theirs'. that agreement where the currencies were pegged lasted from about 1994 to 2005. since then it's only been modified slightly with their currency still tremendously under-valued to ours'. This special relationship makes the dollar artificially valuable. It means that during this time we've lost a lot of industrial capacity. and given that we must compete with the chinese to build back that capacity, even if our currency were to trade at what market forces would value it rather than political agreements, we would have a very difficult time building that capacity back. Our industry has been destroyed as if we were in a war which we lost and the foreign enemy destroyed our industry.

they are the ones now that could if they chose to build a massive military machine that could invade us. we could not duplicate the performance of 1942- 1945 when we built such a military machine. because our industry is destroyed.

some things for an historian to contemplate.

Did Ike hurt the U.S. economy when he used economic pressure to force the Brits, French, and Israelis to back down from their Suez adventure in 1956?

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

We can survive it a lot better than they can.

But Yertle - they are the producers of goods, we are the consumers. and they can turn their production capacity to weaponry if they choose.

all they are doing now is building building building strength. and our economy continues to be hallowed out - with our people growing more & more delusional over it quite frankly.

The great Chinese weakness is food & the other resources that they must import. our great weakness (besides our loss of industry) is that people around the world hate us.

1. Sun Tzu said: In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy's country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it, to capture a regiment, a detachment or a company entire than to destroy them. 2. Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. 3. Thus the highest form of generalship is to balk the enemy's plans; the next best is to prevent the junction of the enemy's forces; the next in order is to attack the enemy's army in the field; and the worst policy of all is to besiege walled cities.

Thing is, nearly 100% of their money actually goes into weapons systems and troop support, whereas probably 10% or less of our money goes where it's supposed to go, with the rest being pocketed by those who control the show.

Hell, what did the DOD lose right before 9/11, 2.3 TRILLION dollars or so?

I disagree. They have already beaten us,

The Chinese are losers and always have been, just like India. These are nations that have been around for thousands of years and have done nothing. Today they imitate us and are parasites on us.

I'm a racist. 99% of everything in the world was invented by white men. 80% of it came in a swatch from northern Italy, through France and Germany, through northern Europe, and then through England and Scotland.

India and China -- almost nothing. Africa? Don't make me laugh. All three lack the ability, genetically.

India and China will blow up. China has problems you would not believe -- no women, no viable banks, horrible pollution.

Without us, all three would collapse even faster.

I can remember 20 years ago people were howling Japan was going to take over the world. I laughed. Now they're howling that China and India are. I'm still laughing.

We'll see who laughs last, and I guarantee you it will be me.
