The Bad Astronomer writes "Rumors have been flying in recent days that the SETI project has received a strong signal from space, indicating the possibility of intelligent extraterrestrial life. Bad Astronomy breaks down the origins of this (false) claim, which mostly amounts to a heaping helping of shoddy journalism. 'I just talked to Dan Wertheimer, the astronomer quoted in the article. He told me that the original interview was about sending signals into space (so-called active SETI) as opposed to just listening for aliens. After the interview, he talked to the reporter about some of the astronomy he does, including looking at what are called radio transients: bursts of radio waves that are seen once and never repeat. These may come from one-off events like colliding neutron stars, exploding stars, and so on. Somehow, in the article the reporter mixed up the observation of the transient signals with detecting a signal from E.T.'"

This always has bothered me. People who are supposedly scientists, understanding that by the logic and knowledge of the day that things in the universe have evolved under similar circumstances everywhere, have this idiotic idea that any other sentient species out there aren't at least as warlike and bent on expansion as we are. While it may be that case, it's not the brightest idea to go broadcasting happy bullshit from a piece of the most prime real estate out here on the Galactic rim.

Just what we need on top of dealing with a pack of assholes in our government, a Plark "world scrubber" parking in orbit to stake a claim...

Government blows and that which governs least blows least...

You give lots of credentials to "Bad Astronomy" and "Bad Astronomer". You shouldn't, they don't deserve it.

As for "mixed up the observation of the transient signals with detecting a signal from E.T." - statement is misleading and dishonest. Here's why: if signal is received that significantly differ from signals known to be produced by space, signal is going on analysis. Analysis could last for years, maybe decades. Ergo, many years (if ever) is needed to establish is it made by someone or is it just a space noise.

In any case, signal received is going to analysis. Analysis will take it's time - probably many years. Until analysis is finished, we have no way to say much about it. We all have to wait.

The only issue is will the process of analyzing be public or secret. I was always a voice for doing things publicly (I'm in retirement now). I was one of the very few. You see, after signal went public, SETI scientist Dan Werthimer said: "although this pulse is not well understood... it may have a natural origin". But again, mentioned pulse might have some other (not natural) origin. The comment is two-sworded indeed.

And where are we now. After all said, here's a news for you: Allen array in California is now (as I write this) actively searching for more of these signals.

In conclusion, I'm puzzled by your position on this topic: you probably don't know much about it...but again Bush don't know much about anything...
