WASHINGTON - Republican Mitt Romney won Nevada's caucuses Saturday while John McCain and Mike Huckabee dueled in the South Carolina primary, a campaign doubleheader likely to winnow the crowded field of presidential rivals.

Democrats shared the stage in Nevada, where Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama vied for a caucus victory and the campaign momentum that goes with it.

Romney's western victory marked two straight successes, coming after a win in the Michigan primary earlier in the week that revived his campaign.

Alone among the Republican contenders, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas aired television ads in Nevada, and the libertarian-leaning Texan looked for his best showing of the campaign season.

Nevada offered more delegates but far less appeal to the Republican candidates than South Carolina, a primary that has gone to the party's eventual nominee every four years since 1980.

That made it a magnet for former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who staked his candidacy on a strong showing, as well as for Romney, McCain, the Arizona senator; and Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas.

Weather troubles and the polls Polls in South Carolina opened Saturday at 7 a.m. with many areas seeing rain coming down. A poll manager in Mount Pleasant said it would be difficult to predict what the inclement weather would do to voter turnout. In the northern reaches of the state up to three inches of snow was forecast, which threatened to slow the region to a crawl.

"My friends, these are challenging times," John McCain told supporters Friday while aboard a World War II aircraft carrier in Charleston's harbor. He was referring to the slumping economy, but he could have been talking about the intensity and the expense of the neck-and-neck fight for the GOP nomination.

To the East, Republicans battled for delegates in South Carolina, home of 6.6 percent unemployment in December after the largest one-month increase in nearly 20 years. Political viability was at stake for McCain, Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson; Mitt Romney, meanwhile, lowered expectations for his prospects in the Palmetto State by moving on to Nevada.

To the West, candidates of both parties braced for caucuses in Nevada that for Democrats have been mired in legal disputes and exchanges about race. The uncertainty stemmed in large part from earlier-than-usual voting in the nation's fastest-growing state.

GOP Caucus Complaints Emerge

One election observer with the League of Women Voters said she saw organizers at a Carson City location call off the registration process after about 1,000 participants arrived. Her account has not been confirmed, but Nancy Scott said they simply skipped the registration because it would have taken too long and went ahead with the caucus meeting, trusting the everyone was registered. www.kolotv.com/home/headlines/13 919082.html

# DCliftonReno Says:

January 19th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

I went to a caucaus in Washoe this morning and we had at least 4 out of 13 delegates in our precinct for Ron Paul. I heard the entrance/exit polls were going 2 to 1 RonPaul over McCain. But in the county polls…they currently show McCain ahead of Paul with about 60% of the vote in….very strange indeed.

Here’s the county link: http://www.nvgopcaucus.com/county

FAUX NEWS DOES IT AGAIN!!!

By DCliftonReno | January 19, 2008

Check out the SCREEN SHOT from the broadcast.

For those 2 or 3 of you left out there who might believe that Fox News is “fair”…I returned from my caucus this morning, turned on the news and results were pouring in. Romney had been declared the winner, and the Fox Bimbo skirt announced, “behind Romney was….pause….pause…John McCain with….followed by…..Mike Huckabee.” The 3 Amigos were displayed on the screen. Only problem was…that Ron Paul was showing on the tally bar below as being in SECOND PLACE with more votes than either McCain or Huckabee.

They just can’t bring themselves to mention his name! Outrageous!!!

Report from Ron Paul Headquarters in Reno, NV

By kolanos | January 19, 2008

I volunteered for the Ron Paul Campaign at the Reno Headquarters this morning, providing voters with precinct information by phone and recording polling data as it was reported by election monitors, and I have a few brief things to report.

1. The Reno headquarters were alerted by the Las Vegas branch that Mitt Romney’s campaign was providing the Ron Paul precinct hotline number out to Romney voters. So not only were the Ron Paul hotline lines being clogged up by Romney voters, many Ron Paul volunteers unwittingly assisted Romney voters determine their correct precinct numbers. Clearly one of many “dirty tricks” going around NV today. So if any Nevada Ron Paul supporters were wondering why they couldn’t get through on the hotline, that is likely the reason.

2. I received numerous reports (I personally received 8, however I was aware of z dozen seperate precinct cases) from precincts in Washoe county of votes being counted in private rooms, vote count information being sealed in envelopes and not being provided for review by election monitors, as well as cases where votes were counted in a seperate room with a glass window seperating the counters from the election monitors. Additionally, comparing the polling reported numbers from Washoe in comparison with other counties, there was a signifigant drop off in votes for Paul in Washoe. Of course these could be isolated incidents, but the fact that all these reported cases came from Washoe, and none from Clark county (that I’m aware of) leaves me to believe there is something fishy going on in regards to the count in Washoe.

3. I also received reports of disabled people being barred from participating in the caucus. I received half a dozen reports of handicapped parking spaces at school precinct locations being gated off, as well as wheelchair ramps being blocked. I was also notified of one case where a woman in a wheelchair was able to get up 16 flights of stairs with assistance from a friend only to be turned away at the door because there “wasn’t any room for a wheelchair”. Blocking off handicapped parking spots and wheelchair ramps would violate building codes, and I hope these incidents will be looked into.

But here's what's in the back of my mind and really bugging me.

Hitlery's winning again.

And I'm between a rock and a hard place.

I've sworn to myself to vote for RP on write-in if necessary ... but if it's Hitlery vs one of the Plutocrat stooges? I'm 72 years old. I'm healthy, but let's face it, I'm definitely playin' the back nine.

gots no idea why it shouldn't be required in all states. it is here and has always been mandatory here before you get your ballot as long as I can remember. but that wouldn't stop certain groups from taking advantage of the affidavit signing at multiple locations, like what was rumored of clintons vans full of people making the rounds in NH. what the hell is the deal with that anyway, is it too complex to remember to bring a picture ID with you. I know the 'off-the-grid' issue is one thing, but why would they want to participate in the first place? that's part of the reason why they're otg. shit, everyone needs some form of legal identification for one reason or another, and if they prefer to participate in the voting ritual, there should be some procedure to verify that you live in that precinct where you are voting so you don't have multiple voting crap going on. that is, in an honest vote counting situation. what's going on today is a farce.

yeah, it should note something. I don't know how it goes in other states, but I believe that has to be confirmed before anyone gets registered here, in the first place, and then you have to show your ID to be compared against the list, twice, of registered voters in the precinct before you're given a ballot. my mother worked every election in her township for over twenty years and they wouldn't let anyone through if their ducks weren't all in a row. I don't get how other states can be so lax on their process.
