WASHINGTON - Republican Mitt Romney won Nevada's caucuses Saturday while John McCain and Mike Huckabee dueled in the South Carolina primary, a campaign doubleheader likely to winnow the crowded field of presidential rivals.

Democrats shared the stage in Nevada, where Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama vied for a caucus victory and the campaign momentum that goes with it.

Romney's western victory marked two straight successes, coming after a win in the Michigan primary earlier in the week that revived his campaign.

Alone among the Republican contenders, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas aired television ads in Nevada, and the libertarian-leaning Texan looked for his best showing of the campaign season.

Nevada offered more delegates but far less appeal to the Republican candidates than South Carolina, a primary that has gone to the party's eventual nominee every four years since 1980.

That made it a magnet for former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who staked his candidacy on a strong showing, as well as for Romney, McCain, the Arizona senator; and Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas.

Weather troubles and the polls Polls in South Carolina opened Saturday at 7 a.m. with many areas seeing rain coming down. A poll manager in Mount Pleasant said it would be difficult to predict what the inclement weather would do to voter turnout. In the northern reaches of the state up to three inches of snow was forecast, which threatened to slow the region to a crawl.

"My friends, these are challenging times," John McCain told supporters Friday while aboard a World War II aircraft carrier in Charleston's harbor. He was referring to the slumping economy, but he could have been talking about the intensity and the expense of the neck-and-neck fight for the GOP nomination.

To the East, Republicans battled for delegates in South Carolina, home of 6.6 percent unemployment in December after the largest one-month increase in nearly 20 years. Political viability was at stake for McCain, Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson; Mitt Romney, meanwhile, lowered expectations for his prospects in the Palmetto State by moving on to Nevada.

To the West, candidates of both parties braced for caucuses in Nevada that for Democrats have been mired in legal disputes and exchanges about race. The uncertainty stemmed in large part from earlier-than-usual voting in the nation's fastest-growing state.

I would prefer it if he not patronize me by suggesting that I might be his friend, especially when he has repeatedly tried to sell out my country.

The big challenge we have is to deprogram our fellow citizens without engaging in similarly unscrupulous tactics. As Mary Starrett, communications director of the Constitution Party and former KATU & KPDQ media personality says, the truth doesn't matter if the media doesn't reinforce it, or chooses to dismiss it.

We're in a generational race. The current Internet-savvy youth are growing up, and will take on increasingly important leadership roles. Meanwhile, there are moves to regulate the Internet that are being sold to them as democratic and egalitarian (net "neutrality" and so forth).

I was just talking about this with Artisan. If these young and newly awakened sheeple would all run for public office locally for starters, this ball will keep rolling.

They may succeed in shutting down and editing the news available on the internet, but there's a growing new attitude out there, that cannot be put back in the box.

I'm more pessimistic in the short term. I think the interests who control our news media and educational systems can put anything they want back into the box. They just don't think it's necessary yet. Cable Internet comes to us via controlled media giants. The Telecommunications industry delivers DSL. We saw how Telecomm folded under pressure from the NSA. We know that public education is centrally influenced via federal funding and programs like NCLB. Disinformation is potentially embedded in every form of information we consume.

The race is on. My hope is that the kids continue our American tradition of questioning authority. They don't even need to believe what we tell them. They just need to question authority.

More than that, she's even got the local conservative talk-show hosts riled up, mostly over her "Dump Bush" stance. Not a bad thing, but she needs to tone it down a bit to get her message out.

I've been more vocal than she has about wanting Bush-Cheney impeached. I think she gives authority to the anti-establishment movement, and is a credit to those who openly disbelieve the Bush administration whenever it speaks.

buckeye  posted on  2008-01-19   14:32:02 ET  Reply   Trace   Private Reply

#25. To: buckeye (#24)

Fair enough, but one must follow the adage "adapt, migrate, or die" when dealing with others.

The message can still get out, but it has to be toned and phrased appropriately for the venue.

Of course, Portland and Seattle are towns where "Buck Fush" bumper stickers and "Kerry/Edwards" stickers are everywhere...still...but the liberal media won't talk to Starrett and the conservative media thinks she's a nutjob.

The trick is to not be declared a nutjob so you are invited on to get your message out. That's the problem with people who are seriously into what they believe -- and forget that not everyone shares the same passion.

Thus, the message is quashed and never gets out. It has to be made palatable to plant the seeds and then watered and fertilized frequently.

America is not at war. The military is at war. America is at the mall and the Congress is out to lunch.

Thus, the message is quashed and never gets out.

My evaluation of this statement is that it occurs whenever the truth gets a little too clear. It's not the messenger, or the vehicle of the message that elicits this response: it's the clarity of the message and its potential to undermine the establishment.

She's apparently now in patriotic rage mode. Righteous indignation a persuasive person does not make.

On the contrary, righteous indignation, properly harnessed, makes a VERY persuasive person.

Starrett needs to learn how to properly harness her rage and indignation to make a persuasive argument.

Once she works that out, she'll be able to work miracles. People tend to give a lot of value to an argument that people passionately believe in and will give it a second or third look.

The results at Chapparall High School were as follows with a margin of error only for Romney… This is the East Side of Las Vegas. I would guess the turn out in general to be about 5% if that. In my precinct, it was nearly 14%. I was the precinct captain and became a delegate with 1 RP alternate. Romney received 2, then Giuliani and Huck with 1. We were as follows 12 Romney, 8 RP, 7 Huckabee, 3 Giuliani, 1 McCain and 1 Thompson. Good times!

This is the result of the unscientific poll at Free Republic. Note Dr. Paul is not even given as a choice, and FReepers follow JimRob's endorsement of Thompson like lemmings off a cliff into the ocean.

...and then they turn around and say that anybody who disagrees with them has been "brainwashed by the liberal media."

I'm surprised that Robinson didn't endorse Giuliani or McCain. While everyone on that list is bad, these two are the darlings of Fox News and other neocon media. They make the most noise about "winning the war on terror" and all that.

Voting machine problems reported in one South Carolina county

By http://ronpaul4freedom.com | January 19, 2008

(CNN) — Poll workers in Horry County tell CNN voting machines have been down since polls opened Saturday morning throughout the county — the machines are not reading an activation card.

Workers have been giving out paper ballots but at least one precinct has run out of envelopes to seal them in (not a sign of turnout — they had just 23 such ballots on hand). Election workers say that officials have told them they are working precinct by precinct to fix the problem and that a few voting machines may now be running, but some voters have been turned away and asked to check back later.

Three poll workers also tell CNN the county has about 100 precincts and all have been affected. CNN is awaiting a call back from the county’s election supervisor.

Horry County, which includes Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, was a John McCain stronghold in 2000 — he beat then Texas Gov. George Bush there by 2,500 votes.

Voting machines malfunction in South Carolina Republican primary

By http://ronpaul4freedom.com | January 19, 2008

CONWAY, South Carolina (CNN) – Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign called on supporters in South Carolina Saturday to make sure that their votes are counted, as voting machines in an eastern county malfunctioned on primary day.

“We have received reports from Horry County that voters are being turned away from the polls, because electronic voting machines are not working and paper ballots are not available,” Buzz Jacobs, McCain’s South Carolina state director, said in a statement. “Some voters say they are being instructed to return at a later time. We are disturbed by these reports and hope that this issue is resolved immediately. We encourage any voters who were turned away from the polls to return again to their polling place this afternoon to exercise their constitutional right to vote.”

Katon Dawson, chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, said that he had confidence the problem was being fixed.

“We expect a full and fair count,” Dawson said in a telephone interview with CNN. “In South Carolina, our citizens take the right to vote very seriously. We have full confidence in our state elections commission, which is running this primary. Any questions that have arisen are being addressed.”

Dawson noted that “there is always a backup in case there is an election machine malfunction and a ballot can’t be cast.”

Lisa Bourcier, public information for Horry County, said that 80 percent of the voting machines were back on-line as of 1:30 p.m. ET.

South Carolina was holding its Republican primary Saturday, a critical contest on the road to the GOP presidential nomination.

GOP Caucus Complaints Emerge

One election observer with the League of Women Voters said she saw organizers at a Carson City location call off the registration process after about 1,000 participants arrived. Her account has not been confirmed, but Nancy Scott said they simply skipped the registration because it would have taken too long and went ahead with the caucus meeting, trusting the everyone was registered. www.kolotv.com/home/headlines/13 919082.html

But in the county polls…they currently show McCain ahead of Paul with about 60% of the vote in….very strange indeed.

FAUX NEWS DOES IT AGAIN!!!

By DCliftonReno | January 19, 2008

Check out the SCREEN SHOT from the broadcast.

For those 2 or 3 of you left out there who might believe that Fox News is “fair”…I returned from my caucus this morning, turned on the news and results were pouring in. Romney had been declared the winner, and the Fox Bimbo skirt announced, “behind Romney was….pause….pause…John McCain with….followed by…..Mike Huckabee.” The 3 Amigos were displayed on the screen. Only problem was…that Ron Paul was showing on the tally bar below as being in SECOND PLACE with more votes than either McCain or Huckabee.

They just can’t bring themselves to mention his name! Outrageous!!!

Report from Ron Paul Headquarters in Reno, NV

By kolanos | January 19, 2008

I volunteered for the Ron Paul Campaign at the Reno Headquarters this morning, providing voters with precinct information by phone and recording polling data as it was reported by election monitors, and I have a few brief things to report.

1. The Reno headquarters were alerted by the Las Vegas branch that Mitt Romney’s campaign was providing the Ron Paul precinct hotline number out to Romney voters. So not only were the Ron Paul hotline lines being clogged up by Romney voters, many Ron Paul volunteers unwittingly assisted Romney voters determine their correct precinct numbers. Clearly one of many “dirty tricks” going around NV today. So if any Nevada Ron Paul supporters were wondering why they couldn’t get through on the hotline, that is likely the reason.

2. I received numerous reports (I personally received 8, however I was aware of z dozen seperate precinct cases) from precincts in Washoe county of votes being counted in private rooms, vote count information being sealed in envelopes and not being provided for review by election monitors, as well as cases where votes were counted in a seperate room with a glass window seperating the counters from the election monitors. Additionally, comparing the polling reported numbers from Washoe in comparison with other counties, there was a signifigant drop off in votes for Paul in Washoe. Of course these could be isolated incidents, but the fact that all these reported cases came from Washoe, and none from Clark county (that I’m aware of) leaves me to believe there is something fishy going on in regards to the count in Washoe.

3. I also received reports of disabled people being barred from participating in the caucus. I received half a dozen reports of handicapped parking spaces at school precinct locations being gated off, as well as wheelchair ramps being blocked. I was also notified of one case where a woman in a wheelchair was able to get up 16 flights of stairs with assistance from a friend only to be turned away at the door because there “wasn’t any room for a wheelchair”. Blocking off handicapped parking spots and wheelchair ramps would violate building codes, and I hope these incidents will be looked into.

I'm pleased with Ron's showing.

But here's what's in the back of my mind and really bugging me.

Hitlery's winning again.

And I'm between a rock and a hard place.

I've sworn to myself to vote for RP on write-in if necessary ... but if it's Hitlery vs one of the Plutocrat stooges? I'm 72 years old. I'm healthy, but let's face it, I'm definitely playin' the back nine.

I don't wanna die with Hitlery in office!

gots no idea why it shouldn't be required in all states. it is here and has always been mandatory here before you get your ballot as long as I can remember. but that wouldn't stop certain groups from taking advantage of the affidavit signing at multiple locations, like what was rumored of clintons vans full of people making the rounds in NH. what the hell is the deal with that anyway, is it too complex to remember to bring a picture ID with you. I know the 'off-the-grid' issue is one thing, but why would they want to participate in the first place? that's part of the reason why they're otg. shit, everyone needs some form of legal identification for one reason or another, and if they prefer to participate in the voting ritual, there should be some procedure to verify that you live in that precinct where you are voting so you don't have multiple voting crap going on. that is, in an honest vote counting situation. what's going on today is a farce.

yeah, it should note something. I don't know how it goes in other states, but I believe that has to be confirmed before anyone gets registered here, in the first place, and then you have to show your ID to be compared against the list, twice, of registered voters in the precinct before you're given a ballot. my mother worked every election in her township for over twenty years and they wouldn't let anyone through if their ducks weren't all in a row. I don't get how other states can be so lax on their process.

Ah, a tiny piece of the Sun peeks through the black clouds.

Many years ago, a couple years after the implosion of my 25 year marriage, I came across an actual picture of just such a celestial occurrence. I asked my mother-in-law to be (a pretty darn good amateur artist) if she could reproduce it in oils. She did, and it hangs in my office to this day.

I turn to at times like this.
