We are contracting with Interquest, a canine unit, which will come onto our campus periodically. Though **** has great kids, we are not immune from drug and alcohol issues. This is the same company that serves the AISD, Nolan, FW Christian, Southwest Christian, etc. If you have any questions, please contact me. --principal
Poster Comment: For some perspective, I'm an ex-cop. I believe marijuana should be legalized. Regardless, I've spent tons of time at their school during school hours, after school hours and at extracuricular events. I know many of the kids. I have NEVER mentally sensed something was up, smelled anything, seen anything, noticed anything but the best behavior among the students...no drugs, no alcohol...keep in mind this canine unit is for ON campus. I also believe it is a violation of the 4th Amendment regardless of what the JusticeIndustrialComplex thinks. In one building, there are K-6th grades. Across the walkway, there are 7th through 12th. Everyone knows everyone else, everyone gets along..you'd have to see it to understand how ridiculous this canine idea is. This is a rather small Christian school and I see no reason why this "threat" needs to be foisted upon the kids to intimidate them. Is this principal just trying to mimick everyone else and allow the PoliceState to INFECT these kids' lives? IMO, this is an accident or ruined innocent life waiting to happen. How would YOU respond to the principal? I'm an excellent writer but I'm too POed about this one to think straight.

Notice the canine unit is a PRIVATE contractor....with no oversight. How else to keep one's existence relevant but to plant crap in the school!!!!

Hell the dog may be coming there to teach math or science.
Get in touch with all the other parents first and confront him together?

You have the right to take your money elsewhere. Public schools are another matter.
There is only one answer; prepare to change schools, and make sure that the pricipal knows this. Contact other parents and voice your concerns, and ask for a consenus; everyone acting together. But regardless of what the others do, prepare. Home schooling is an option if there is no other.

Indie, I imagine that this action was prompted by the school's board of directors. The best time time to head this off would have been before the matter had proceeded to this stage. If there was no consultation with the Board, the principal is overstepping his authority. Identify parents who see things the way you do & bring your combined heat to the board. Demand that they show you cause why they believe that dog cops are needed. Let him/them understand that you read this as evidence that the school and its mission are being corrupted by the public school modus operandi.

Maybe yes. They might think you equate 'freedom' with 'drugs'. They might take it as too emotional.
Removed...thanks. I revised it to include why campus security is important and praised the new fence, etc and made a strong differentiation between security and safety of our children from external threats and why that has nothing to do with a drug sniffing dog.

I was a Dallas Police Officer for several years. I have some pertinent questions for you both regarding the decision to employ a private canine unit on **** property. 1. Who was involved in contracting this private company? The board of directors? 2. Will the dog be on campus during school hours? 3. Were the parents consulted before this decision was made? (rhetorical question) 4. Is there some PROBABLE CAUSE that makes either one of you or anyone on the board think that **** has a problem with drugs on campus all of the sudden on January 28, 2008???? If something is amiss, I really want to know. Or are we just spending the money on this to be "preemptive?" 5. Has anyone involved in this decision researched the psychological effects of a canine search unit in school and HOW they actually do their work? (I have) Has anyone researched it at all or are we just copying the MO of the rest of the world without considering the many psychological or physical risks? 6. Does anyone involved in this decision, even though a private entity has the right to do as they please with regard to search and seizure, read the 4th Amendment to the Constitution? This will be a great lesson for the children in whether the Constitution applies in certain situations, and they will soon find out it does NOT apply on private property, as well as scare the heck out of many. 7. Again, I would like to know the specific rationale used in deciding to deploy a drug sniffing dog on the *** campus, as well as the answers to the above questions. I request emphatically that you show cause why you believe that dog cops are needed because again, if something is going on, I want to know about it. Without good cause to deploy a dog, I interpret this as evidence that the school and its mission are being corrupted by the public school police state modus operandi... Such matters are best handled other ways..and there are other ways. I have MANY reasons why I am against this, all of which I can state plainly should it become necessary. The number one reason it that this is an accident waiting to happen (dog bites child) or an innocent life just waiting to be destroyed (I can explain what I mean by this and it refers to the integrity of the private contractor. What better way to make one's corporate existence relevant than to plant reasons, i.e. "throw down" drugs?), however I will withhold final judgement until I hear the answers to the above. It is obvious I am not "soft on crime" from my DPD credentials, AND I BELIEVE STRONGLY IN CAMPUS SECURITY. (Thank you for building the fence!!! Our CHILDREN NEED this protection as well as the teachers!!) But are drug searches a security issue? I can illustrate why the risks of such an operation outweigh possible perceived benefits. Unless we fear that actual non-student drug dealers will come onto our campus (the fence and security cameras should hopefully stop that), how can a dog stop them? A dog's purpose is to alert to the presence of what it has been trained to find, or whatever it's handler places there for it to find. A much simpler way, if you insist on this course of action, is, IF you have reason, to employ the ***** Police Dept to conduct a canine search AFTER HOURS, rather than a private contractor to conduct random anytime searches. And I would even disagreee with this due to the below. And how could an innocent student have their lives ruined you may ask???? All it takes is one bad kid to throw down a bag of drugs into an innocent kid's locker. My child has had liquid poured into his locker because the top was not secure. Also anything could be slipped through a locker vent. Can you not see the implications of your action??? It is always better that an innocent person not be incarcerated rather than a guilty one to be caught. (They taught me that in the Police Academy!) I don't believe that there is any perceived problem at ***. I believe this is a preemptive decision because it seems to be popular in today's sick society. Geez, that sucks. On the other hand, ain't nothin you're gonna do to change it by force, imo. I might take the tactic in writing a friendly firm response that you don't approve and why. Also, request a response to some of the excellent questions posed above. That way, you're still in the driver's seat. You let them know your position. You make them respond to your concerns and you still have options re: removal from school or group resistance or whatever else without having burned your bridges.

Your purpose in sending your children there was for them to obtain a better education. That should include any and all areas of life relative subjects including intimidation, improper investigation, forfeiture of privacy without cause, and generally submission to a private contractor without having consented. The school should have notified the parents prior to collecting the tuition for the current school year. Another poster mentioned contacting and possibly organizing other parents. I second the motion.

That's when it became obvious he hadn't bid the job or even looked at alternatives. He was using his position in the church to pick the church's pocket for a pal (who he probably sold a car to). I'd bet you dollars to donuts you don't have a drug problem. You have a salesman problem. Same crap that happens in the Grange.
I agree with angle's advice. Also I'd say that when you come up with your final version of a letter after sleeping on it tonight, it needs to be much briefer in addition to cutting out the emotional aggressive tone. I'd recommend that your letter be short and show lots of concern and maybe sprinkle in a bit of "puzzlement/bewilderment" as you put forward questions to the Principal, so he is compelled to respond to your concerns and questions with facts not fuzzy "the problem of drugs is everywhere." Send a copy to the Board of Trustees President because if the principal is doing this on his on accord, the Trustees will be mighty annoyed. I would definitely remove any political allusion to Americans' loss of freedoms in your letter because you want to stay on point ( your school's new policy) and not give the principal any ammunition to write you off to the Trustees as a loose cannon crank who has "issues." Not that you are a crank but don't let your principal have any opportunity to frame you as one. Personally I suspect this has more to do with a handful of a bad apple students and their parents who refuse to control/discipline them so the principal and trustees figure this is a few to keep bad apple habits/bad parenting under control so it does not spread and so they they are not sued for "picking on" poor little bad apple Joey and Janice having only their lockers and desks being sniffed by canine units. You may think that you are familiar with all the kids and their parents but you'd be surprised what you don't see but what comes up in the principal's office.

I was on the board of trustees of a gigantic Lutheran church for a while, and we had a car salesman who was on the "evangelism" committee. He promised some buddy the contract to install televisions and cameras and crap in the church for some 30 grand, and then tried to ram it through trustees. When I asked if he'd gotten competitive bids, he got very angry and said, "Why don't YOU get competitive bids if you think you can get this done for less?"
