It's the Missouri Ozarks in southwest Missouri,

Low cost of living, a huge lake, swimming, beautiful scenery, boating, fishing, cheap land (for the most part) creeks, slow shallow rivers, scuba diving, caves, cliffs, horses, camping, hiking, restarants, Branson, a roller coaster, Imax theaters, float trips, canoeing, friendly people, minorities not welcome (a fair amount of gays in Branson because of the theater and entertainment but they bother no one), area was mostly settled by the Scots-Irish ("you don't bother me and I won't bother you"), horse auctions, fiddling, you name it, it's probably there.

Scots-Irish: "you don't bother me and I won't bother you"

It's pretty ironic, then, that this is the group which enlists most heavily in the U.S. military and is now engaged in "bothering" people all over the world under orders of the Chimperor, who is of Anglo, Germanic and, most of all (judging by his appearance), simian extraction.

Missouri is the last place the War Between the States ended. Jesse James, for example.

Ever see the movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales"? Wales was a Scot-Irish farmer in the Ozarks.

I'm not talking about the Scots-Irish in any place but the Ozarks.

When I was 16 years old two of my friends were in the Ozarks. We stopped in a bar and got burgers and beer. The county sheriff, who had a big sheriff belly, was playing poker for money at a table with his friends. They didn't even look at us with our hair down past our shoulders.

It's still like that, even now.

These are who settled East Texas as well. I think robin has it right. The Scots-Irish join the military not so much out of a desire to be imperialists, but because it's the only job they can get.

They make good soldiers because they practically come out of the womb heavily armed. That's why I've always sort of longed for some President to take office and actually order all the guns in private hands to be confiscated. That would be very entertaining to watch unfold.

I keep my hair about an inch long these days.

Those hippy high school days are long gone.

It's the Missouri Ozarks in southwest Missouri,

I gave a lot of thought to that area when I left Montana. That, or northern Idaho. But......

Time once was that Atlanta, Idaho was the place to live but now even that has gone to the slicks.

What's left of may hair is in a pony tail...after 24 years of military high and tight haircuts, I said screw it. Sometimes I don't shave for a week or more. But I do bathe regularly. Once a year.

The Scots-Irish fight because they are the embodiment of "Don't tread on me".

As well as you write, you don't hold a candle to Jim Webb.

Republicans (Democrats for that matter) ....... HAD ENOUGH?

EXACTLY.

As much as I dislike to admit it, I think a lot of what we are is genetic.

In my family, not one male has ever worked for anyone else. Too independent, too distrustful of "authority." Every one of them is anti-military. My grandfather punched an officer in WWI who cursed him, and got away with it. My uncle ended up in the stockcade during Korea

I went to college, did the suit-and-tie thing, and gave it up. Now I work for myself, too.

I realized year ago this is not cultural, it is genetic, and all of us are Scots-Irish from Tennesee and Kentucky. I tell people I'm a Scots-Irish Ozarkian hillbilly, because that's exactly what I am.

Hmm ....... I was self employed for 35 years of my adult working life.

I had this thought overnight ... the best place to live is "comfortable in your own skin".

Republicans (Democrats for that matter) ....... HAD ENOUGH?
