Paul Excluded From The Tennessean Voter’s Guide

By sligh | February 3, 2008

From Nashville Ron Paul Meetup Group website:

“With time running short before Tuesday’s primary election in Tennessee, the Middle Tennessee area’s most prominent newspaper, The Tennessean (Gannett) , failed to include Presidential Candidate Ron Paul in its voter guide published in the Sunday edition of the newspaper on page 22A. The voter guide gives detailed information about the other three major GOP candidates, but does not feature candidate Ron Paul. The Nashville Ron Paul Meetup Group would like to express its outrage at this apparent blatant discrimination against Ron Paul.”

Photos of the Tennessean’s “voter’s guide” layout:

I am in this meetup group and hardly a fraction as active as many of the members. They are working around the clock to spread Paul’s message to Tennesseans and this is a real smack in the face to those that have worked so hard for this coming Tuesday, and to the readers are aren’t getting an informed look at the presidential candidates. We are calling and emailing to persuade them that a correction should be made in Monday’s paper.

The Tennessean Apologizes

By John Mascaro | February 4, 2008

I apologize for the omission.

The candidates’ position grid we published was provided by one of our wire services. It omitted Dr. Paul. We should have caught the omission but we did not. There’s no excuse on our part — but that’s what happened. We will publish a complete version of the grid tomorrow.

From: John Mascaro [mailto:xxxx@xxxx.net] [details ommitted for privacy] Sent: Monday, February 04, 2008 1:26 PM To: Silverman, Mark Subject: Your Coverage of the Presidential Race Dear Mr. Silverman

While your paper’s position to not endorse any primary candidates is to some degree commendable, until such time as a candidate officially backs out from a race, it behooves all media to at least mention all who are still running lest that media organization be suspected of electioneering rather than reporting. Your unfair treatment today of Ron Paul by excluding him altogether from the pictorial coverage of the various candidates still in the race borders on the former and, I believe, clearly disqualifies it from the latter.

If this is what The Tennessean calls proper coverage of a news event such as a presidential race I will encourage my friends, web site subscribers and your advertisers to re-consider their support of your paper.

Sincerely,

John Mascaro

Walnut Hill, FL
