Dole scolds Limbaugh

By: Mike Allen Feb 4, 2008 06:42 PM EST Updated: February 4, 2008 06:42 PM EST

In a letter released Monday evening by McCain's campaign, Dole strongly defended the senator’s conservative credentials.

Bob Dole, the former Senate Republican leader, wrote an insistent letter to Rush Limbaugh on Monday and suggested that for the good of the party, the conservative talk-show host should stop his strafing of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

On Monday's show, Limbaugh asserted that McCain has "lied about his reason for opposing the Bush tax cuts," and added: "I think McCain has an animus toward the Republican Party. I think ever since South Carolina 2000 he's had it in for the Republican Party, and one of his objectives is to destroy it and change it."

McCain, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, has always had a shaky relationship with the party’s conservative base.

In a letter released Monday evening by McCain's campaign, Dole strongly defended the senator’s conservative credentials, noting that his voting record is opposed to abortion and supportive of gun-owner rights.

As McCain’s campaign gained steam, Limbaugh has used the airwaves to remind listeners daily that he does not consider the senator to be a conservative.

Limbaugh has even suggested he might not vote Republican if McCain were the nominee.

A day ahead of the potentially decisive Super Tuesday primaries, Limbaugh launched new attacks on the senator during Monday’s broadcast, declaring: “John McCain has stabbed his own party in the back, I can’t tell you how many times.”

In a bill of particulars numbered 1 through 8, Dole wrote that McCain has a “Consistent pro-life record,” was a “Strong advocate for strict constructionist judges,” “Supported voluntary school prayer,” supported a balanced-budget amendment, was a strong advocate for cutting spending, consistently defended Second Amendment (gun-owner) rights, “opposed ‘Hillary Care,’ ” and was “Probably the Senate's strongest advocate for strong national defense.”

The letter begins simply “Rush.”

“I have not seen you in a long time but I do hear you frequently and I know that you have serious reservations about Senator McCain,” Dole wrote.

“McCain is a friend and I proudly wore his P.O.W. bracelet bearing his name while he was still a guest at the ‘Hanoi Hilton.’ I believe our major candidates are mainstream conservatives and that our nominee will address our concerns by keeping taxes low, reducing corporate taxes, protecting and assisting the vulnerable, strengthening our traditional values, and above all, keeping America strong militarily, whatever the cost.

“Whoever wins the Republican nomination will need your enthusiastic support,” Dole concludes. “Two terms for the Clintons are enough."

The letter is signed, “God Bless America, BOB DOLE.”

As a P.S., Dole adds a table from the Senate Library showing that McCain’s voting record — as measured by support for the president — mirrored that of the ultra- conservative former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.).

On Monday’s broadcast, Limbaugh said in an audio clip posted at “The Page” on TIME.com: “He stabbed his own president in the back on legislation, a number of times. He doesn’t support his party or his president when the chips are down. He called people who want to protect the border racists, nativists, protectionists, and worse. And what kind of character is it that tries to slide all that through under cover of darkness, in a back room.”

During a broadcast last week that is transcribed on Limbaugh’s Web site, he said McCain enjoys the affection of the left and the media: “I think one of the reasons they're able to embrace candidates like Senator McCain is that he's been so willing to cast conservative principles aside when it makes sense for him politically, socially, or what have you.”

Poster Comment:

Bob Dole die, for the good of the country. A 33rd Degree Masonic suck-ass that is about as Conservative as Karl Marx. Voted for NAFTA/GATT even though he admitted the opposition calls were flooding his office at a rate of 2000 to 1. His concept of conservatism is identical to his notion of "representative" government.

Lord please take this motherfucker out !

In the Farsi language (Irainian) Dole is the word for penis.

Life is a tragedy to those who feel, and a comedy to those who think.

In English the word Dole is most often associated with words like Clinton, McCain, Gingrich, Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Bush, etc., and usually means shit.

In all fairness, Bush's liberalism makes McCain look like Russell Kirk. Of course he's not Russell Kirk and he is very liberal.

My point is that if McCain wins the nomination, Limpballs will shill for McCain just like he shilled for Bush. He would shill for Hillary or Karl Marx himself if they had an "R" behind their name.

No argument here ... lately, Limpjaw has bragged about how in 2007 he declared he wouldn't carry the water for the R's ... what a crock. After 6.5 years of playin waterboy for Bush, and a variety of R's after continually promoting the damage done during that time ... who cares what the drug riddled fucktard has to say ?

Questioner from the audience: "Do you know how many anchor babies there are McCain?"

McCain: "I'm not going to dignify that question with an answer." (i.e. "fuck you..I have the power and you don't")

McCain sucks. They ALL suck except for RP. RP is the last hope until other options are examined.

Exactly. The sad thing is that it didn't have to be that way. If Limpballs would have spent as much time slamming Bush and the Republican Party for their big spending/big government ways as he did Klintoon and the Democrats, neither Bush nor the Republican Party would have gotten away with half of what they got away with. Instead, he was an instrumental tool in furthering their big government/big spending cause. And now me and people like me are supposed to be impressed because he's had a "hallelujah" moment and sees the Republican frontrunners for what they are? Fuck Limpball. He's a day late and a dollar short and STILL won't back the only candidate whose record lives up to Limpballs fifteen or twenty year old small government rhetoric. I just wish I had the ability to tell him to his face what a rotten two-faced piece of shit he is.

Beginning with NAFTA/GATT and the faux Republican Revolution, Bob Dole and the GOP establishment has done more to collapse the Republican Party than Bill Clinton could ever have hoped for. This sorted scenario is shaping up to be an even more delightful mess than I had hoped. Pardon me while I go over to FReeperville and peep in. I'm betting many of us here warned those party lemmings about their pending doom. This is a thing of beauty :)

You continue to use language that could be used to discredit this site. Just what we might expect a troll or disruptor to do.

I don't have much use for Bob Dole. When he ran, I voted for the Libertarian. But I don't think it's the time to attack him when he criticizes Limbaugh.

Bad as Dole and McCain are, Limbaugh is far worse. He defends torture, for God's sake.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

Agree on how bad Limbaugh is, I take it.

So why do you choose this particular moment to attack Dole, and in such a hateful way?

So why do you choose this particular moment to attack Dole, and in such a hateful way?

Because Dole came out from under his rock at this particular moment. He's an absolute scumbag, so is his wife, and there isn't enough space on the internet to express my disgust with the entire political process and most of the participants in it. Just because the masses have acquiesced to the lesser of two evil party politics mentality doesn't mean that I have.

So, whenever the opportunity presents itself I openly offer my honest analysis allowing the chips to fall wherever they may. I've been watching well intentioned, albeit ignorant, Americans finance a total sham all of my life. My position is based upon the history provided by these irresponsible self-serving con-artists, that plagiarize the Constitution every time they open their lie infested mouths. I loathe these self-inflated thieves that go about the destruction of this country with vigor while expecting to be treated like martyrs, saints and heroes. They steal anything not locked down, but worst of all they have stolen hearts, souls and the very dignity of people that simply wish to live in peace.

The likes of Limbaugh (all talkers today) are the worst form of traitor because they preach their venom for mammon, they convince otherwise innocent people to support murder and mayhem but worst of all have they appear to have absolutely no respect for innocent life, the opposite actually being true.

They deserve the gallows and hopefully they will get their just deserts.

Heh heh heh,

those republicans.................

The best they have to offer is mccain, rommney and huckelbee..........

(They have marginalized one of their own, RP, to the point that not even his positions on returning to constitutional government are being heard now.)

Do they even realize what a joke they are?

They squandered a huge opportunity, this will be a major part of the bush legacy.

I just returned from lunch and heard Pills Limpbaugh clarify some Howard Kurz piece.

Limbaugh's position: If, down the road, it comes to McCain, Clinton or Obama he'd rather the Democrats get it so they can take the hits and heat.

Pills seems to avoid criticizing Romney like he does Huckleberry. I don't listen much but I've read elsewhere folks think he's a stealth Romney supporter.

I do listen much and agree with your analysis. Limbaugh never mentions the socialist agendas promoted by EVERY REPUBLICRAP candidate, abortion, same sex corn-holing, forced government medical, war, war and more war.

The other faction isn't a shade different, but we can "have a black socialist Pres. or a woman socialist Pres." regardless of all other factors ... SOCIALISM IS THE PROGRAM.
