From my Principles of Management textbook end-of-chapter assignment:

What challenges might confront a Mexicon manager transferred to the United States to manage a manufacturing plant in Tucson, Arizona? Will these be the same for a U.S. manager transferred to Guadalajara? Explain.

Yep, X-15 smarted off and told the truth!! I'll know next week how much red ink I received for not being culturally sensitive ;-)

Navigating the Labor, OSHA and Environmental regulatory complexes...

Will these be the same for a U.S. manager transferred to Guadalajara?
No, he would merely need to know that the warmer clime would eliminate the need to feel bad over denying Jose Cratchette an additional lump of coal, and little Timmy would have long since been smuggled to the US and gotten his desperately needed operation here...

The question was a test of your ability to negotiate a legal minefield, a necessary talent for mgmt. personnel.

But, if you had to "let 'em know" that feeling superior to Chicanos is a necessary component of your ego self portrait, then you did the company a favor by helping them weed you out of consideration for promotion.

Suppose it was your company and you wanted to make those changes, and you needed to address the potential problems in PC language and corporate legalisms?

That's a different answer and quite a challenge for an intelligent survivor.

Actually, I shared an office with a Mexican company from 1996-1998 and my manager went down to Guadalajara to visit that companies headquarters. I just stated exactly what I observed the Mexican managers doing and what my manager saw in Mexico. It won't go over well, but it's the truth and I'll stand by it; my former manager said he'd back up my answer if needed ;-). It'll be interesting to see how it goes down, I'm prepared to contest any negative grading. Aye carrumba!!!

When I lived in San Diego, I partied quite a bit in Tijuana, and other cities all the way down to Cabo San Lucas. I was hanging out with some Mexicans one night and one of them was a security guard for the "factories" that had been built along the U.S. border and filled with manufacturing equipment, long before NAFTA/GATT.

As far as answering the questions ... tell em what they want to hear. Devise an exit strategy, and that way if something terrible happened to your plant, you'd probably already have another job.

Here's the stock answer I use when people smart off to me:

"Do you know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I'm going to BEAT you with unless you do what I tell you!"

I'm not interested in all this touchy-feely multiculturalism stuff.

Who wants to live like that?

It was literally impossible for those with soft-cyber chips in their head to imagine evil of the Korozhet.

Several of the the greedy bastards for whom I've slaved over the years have accepted whatever absurdities the IRS, the state revenue goons, the EEOC and other regulatory agencies heaped upon them.

It's the price they pay for their McMansions in the 'burbs and their wives' Mercedes.

I received the 5 bonus points, with no red ink, for the end-of-chapter questions on my first exam for a total of 104 points = A+
