Decision 2008: Washington State Caucus Day

Posted: Feb 9, 2008 01:30 PM

Updated: Feb 9, 2008 07:36 PM

E. WASH. - Thousands turned out as Precinct Caucuses for the Democratic and Republican Parties were held Saturday at various locations throughout the area. The Spokane Democratic Chair reported seeing double the number of usual voter turn out some precincts, even triple in some places such as the 4th Legislative District.

Republican Caucus Results: With 40% of the precincts reporting - Ron Paul 49%, Mike Huckabee 21%, John Mccain 16%. Democratic Caucus Results: No clear lead with only 15% precincts reporting. Statewide Caucus Results: The Associated Press is reporting that with 24% of results in, Barack Obama was winning 65% of delegates to Hillary Clinton's 33%.

Washington Republican and Democratic chairmen say the personal visits by the top three presidential hopefuls should send caucus attendance soaring, as partisans gather in hundreds of community meetings at 1 p.m.

Democrats will allocate all 78 of their elected national delegates through the process. Republicans will use results to allot about half of their 37 elected delegates.

The state also has a presidential primary, conducted mostly via mail, on Feb. 19. Republicans will use results to elect half of their national delegates, but Democrats view the primary as a nonbinding popularity contest and won't use it to allocate delegates.

I talked to KHQ

By Chap | February 9, 2008

I called KHQ in Spokhane, WA. I talked to a nice fellow named ‘Jared’ in the news room. He is the person updating their webpage. He says he is getting his info directly from GOP as they count the votes! This is for real!

how does “uncommitted” votes occur in a caucus? anyone?… anyone?…

By researchris | February 9, 2008

so these votes that are coming in for the WA state caucus… where you are voting for delegates for the county convention… how do you get “uncommitted” votes when a person says they will be a delegate, then people vote for what delegate they want to represent them…. so are there actual precincts that have delegates that say they want to run as “uncommitted”? and then people actually vote for them because they back up the delegate and their “uncommitted” status? is that how this “uncommitted” vote numbers work? because the caucus’ are not to raise your individual hand and vote for your GOP candidate, it is electing DELEGATES to REPRESENT a certain candidate….. please someone share comments on how “uncommitted” numbers work in this system….

I was part of a caucus where a slate of uncommitted delegates was among the choices. In fact, I received a phone call asking me to support the uncommitted delegates. Sort of -- we don't like our choices, and this is how we will prove our point.

ATTENTION: just talked to RP Seattle Headquarters…..

By researchris | February 9, 2008

okay, so i called the Ron Paul Seattle Headquarters just before they closed. I had to ask them how there can be 12% of “uncommitted” delegates in the results we see on CNN, MSNBC and all the other “MSM” sites. I asked them “So do people nominate themselves as a uncommitted delegate and then people vote FOR them?” The person said FIRST, do NOT go off any MSM site results. The delegate counts aren’t even known yet. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND….. the results that are shown on CNN and MSM sites are STRAW POLL RESULTS!! What straw poll? When you sign in on the sheet when entering the caucus, you put down who your PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE is….. THAT IS THE STRAW POLL NUMBERS we all are seeing on MSM results! The straw poll numbers have NOTHING to do with DELEGATE counts. You can have a precinct that has 20 people… and 15 are for McCain and 5 for Paul… and only 3 delegate slot… Let’s just say Paul gets ALL 3 delegate slots… what you will see on MSM news outlets will be McCain-15 …. Paul-5. However Ron Paul has ALL 3 delegate slots… THAT IS WHAT MATTERS!

i had to call and get this straightened out as many of us were going nuts over these numbers online… THEY ARE ONLY STRAW POLL NUMBERS…. NOT DELEGATE COUNTS.

The person i spoke to at the RP headquarters said to spread this far and wide so we all know what these numbers are.

According the the Washington State GOP, with 87% reporting for the Republicans “Other” is in the lead with 30% of the vote.

The old media is ignoring Washington like the plague. They could only focus on Louisiana and Obama last night, and were purposely avoiding what’s going on in Washington. This is a huge story - “Other” wins Washington, and they completely ignore it.

Uncommitted delegates are probably a good portion of this “other” category.

I wonder what’s going to happen to the delegates?

I know only about half are at stake because the other half is determined by the Washington primary - this was a caucus.

My guess is that all or most of the delegates will be freed and unbound at the convention, just like Louisiana.
