Reported by: Deb Silverman

Police are looking for a man they say grabbed a nine-year-old girl and raped her inside a vacant Hamilton home.

The alleged incident happened Sunday evening just before 7 p.m. in the 730 block of Sycamore Street.

On Monday, the vacant house where the crime allegedly happened had been spray painted with the words "child molester" and "rapest" (sic). Rocks were thrown through a window.

Police say the suspect enticed the girl to the vacant home and raped her.

After the alleged crime, police say the girl ran across the street to her home, nude, and told her dad what happened.

"She said, 'the guy across the took my bike and told me to do what he wanted or he'd kill me'," said the victim's father, who 9News did not identify to protect the identity of the victim.

When the father went to the home, the suspect was still at the home, apparently lying naked on a bed. He then took off, getting away from the father.

The girl was taken to the hospital for treatment and was then released.

Police haven't been able to find the suspect and are asking for the public's help.

Police are offering this description of the suspect:

Police say the suspect is not related to the victim.

Although police say the house was abandoned, the landlord has told 9News that six tenants have been renting it since December.

More on the story:

Vigilante Arson at Rape Scene

A day after police began investigating the rape of a nine-year-old Hamilton girl the house where it allegedly happened was set on fire.

Hamilton police tell 9News that they have no doubt it was an act of retaliation by vigilantes.

The father of the rape victim is pleading for calm in the neighborhood and is asking his neighbors not to target Hispanic members of the community.

The victim's father said that justice will not be served by burning buildings or by attacking innocent people.

"Everybody thinks they're doing this for me or my daughter to get justice, but justice isn't being caught by burning down houses or beating up innocent people," said the victim's father.

"Because what happened to that house is wrong, but the house itself is innocent. You know, the house didn't do nothing, the owners of that house didn't do nothing," he said.

"Somebody innocent is going to get hurt by this," said Donna Morgan, the landlord's girlfriend.

"You don't go out and hurt all Mexicans because of the act of one," she said.

Police detective Mark Hayes said Tuesday night that the Hamilton Police does not condone vigilantism.

Police also say now they will be forced to spend time and resources that could have been used to search for the rape suspect to search for the arson suspects instead.

The vigilantes' act may also make it even more difficult to retrieve evidence.

"You know, the police are going to do their job and they're going to catch this guy," said the victim's father.

But he is also worried that vigilantes might take the law into their own hands before the case can be heard.

"I hope the neighborhood doesn't catch him, because then he won't even make it to court," the victim's father said.

Hamilton police are also worried a language barrier is keeping them from tracking down the man who raped the nine-year-old girl.

Hamilton's only Spanish-speaking officer is concerned that because the Tri-state's news broadcasts about the crime are in English, non-English speaking people may not even know about the crime -- or who the suspect is that police are looking for.

So he's sent out a messages in Spanish (see "Audio/Video" above) through local newscasts Tuesday night in hopes of alerting the Tri-state's hispanic community.

His message, translated, was:

Hamilton police do say they have leads on the suspect in the rape case, but so far no suspects in the arson case.

The suspect is described as a hispanic male in his early twenties, 5'4"-5'6" tall, 130-140 pounds with a small goatee on his chin.

Police say the suspect has short, spiky hair and a tattoo of a bird (un pájaro) on his left shoulder. He also goes by the street name, "Mario."
