PHOENIX (AP) - Rep. John Shadegg, a seven-term congressman, said Monday he will not seek re-election, becoming the 29th House Republican in the past 13 months to either leave office or decline to seek re-election.

Shadegg, 58, said he wasn't positioning himself to fill the Senate seat that John McCain may abandon as he pursues the White House.

"My plan was to serve as long as I thought I could be effective, but certainly not to stay forever," he told The Associated Press. "I've fought the fight and enjoyed it, and it's been a privilege."

Shadegg is best known for his unsuccessful challenge to House Republican leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Minority Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo., for the top GOP position after Texas Rep. Tom DeLay's resignation.

"He was a smart, honest and honorable rival during the race to be Republican majority leader in 2006, and has continued to be a valued part of our Republican team since," Boehner said. "I will be sorry to see him go."

Shadegg comes from an Arizona family with deep Republican roots. His father, Stephen, ran several campaigns for Sen. Barry Goldwater. In 1994, he won the state's 3rd Congressional District, a GOP stronghold, and went to Washington as Republicans were swept into power under Newt Gingrich's "Contract for America."

Shadegg's departure opens the second Arizona congressional seat held by a Republican. Three-term Republican Rick Renzi announced in August that he would not seek re-election as he faced a federal inquiry into his family business.

The news shocked state GOP officials. He already had raised more than $1 million last year that could be used to defend his seat in November. Democrats cheered Shadegg's departure and said they would campaign hard to replace him.

"This is a guy who doesn't believe in global warming, who has consistently voted to deny health insurance to Arizona kids," said Emily Bittner, spokeswoman for the Arizona Democratic Party. "I think for the first time in his tenure he was in for a tough race and he just didn't want to do it."

Among Republicans, Shadegg's chief of staff, Sean Noble, State Treasurer Dean Martin and Scottsdale lawyer Jordan Rose said they were considering a run for the seat.

I was unaware of his father's activities in work with Barry Goldwater. So that explains to me where a lot of John was coming from.

I worked with his office while at tos1 to try to get the ENUMERATED POWERS ACT enacted into law to force the congresscowards to state the article and section of the Constitution authority for any legislation they wanted enacted.

I listed Ruby Ridge as a keyword, but I can't specifically recall him in congressional hearings on this.

However, I do recall him during hearings on Waco--he most certainly DID NOT buy into the fecal material provided by fedguv.
