WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama was projected to add to his string of recent victories with a substantial triumph over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in Virginia’s Democratic presidential primary, NBC News reported Tuesday.

In the Republican primary, NBC said the race between Sen. John McCain and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was too close to call.

Voters in Maryland and the District of Columbia also were going to the polls Tuesday.

With 168 delegates at stake on Tuesday, Obama hoped to build on the lead that he has gained on Clinton in the past week in NBC News' delegate count.

In polling place interviews, more than eight in 10 voters in Virginia and Maryland said the country is ready to elect either a black or a woman to the White House.

Blacks made up more than a third of the Democratic electorate in Maryland, slightly less in Virginia. Obama, hoping to become the first black president, has consistently polled over 80 percent among African-American voters in primaries this year.

The surveys were conducted by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International for NBC News, the other television networks and The Associated Press. No survey was conducted in the District of Columbia.

The Illinois senator won a string of contests in all regions of the country over the weekend, routing Clinton in a Louisiana primary as well as caucuses in Nebraska, Washington state and Maine.

Many new voters in Virginia In Virginia, the parties were holding binding primaries on the same day for the first time.

Turnout was described as heavy across the state, with waits as long as 90 minutes in the Richmond area, NBC affiliate WWBT reported. State election officials said they expected even longer lines in the evening as people showed up to vote after work.

More than a third of voters in the Virginia Democratic primary said they had not voted in a primary before, as did almost one in five voters in the Maryland Democratic primary, according to the exit interviews.

In the Roanoke area of southwest Virginia, there was some confusion after a weekend wind storm knocked out electricity to about 50 polling places.

Susan Pollard, a spokeswoman for the state Board of Elections, said the board worked with utility companies to get power restored to as many polling places as possible, but eight had to be moved at the last minute.

In Baltimore, where Obama was expected to do especially well, NBC affiliate WBAL quoted city and county officials as describing the turnout as “slow and steady.” Statewide, Maryland elections administrator Linda Lamone projected an overall turnout of 39 percent, with 44 percent turnout for the Democratic primary and 29 percent for the Republicans.

Icy winter weather in the region threw a wild card into the mix.

Hagerstown, in northern Maryland near the border with Pennsylvania, was under a winter weather advisory. A messy mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow was making travel difficult and closing numerous schools, NBC affiliate WHAG reported.

Washington also reported freezing rain, but turnout did not appear to be affected. NBC affiliate WRC said officials were reporting heavy turnout.

Looks like Obama is getting 60% in VA. With that kind of beating, Hillary will be crying all over the place . . . in front of the cameras of course. It will be duck and cover for her campaign staff though.

Don't think so. That kinda trick works once, maybe. After that... you start to look like a whiny crybaby loser, and that would backfire bigtime. Let's face it, the average Democrat wants ANYONE but Hillary. Is it so darn hard to figure out? MoveOn members polled over 70% in favor of Obama, as did Washington State Democrats.

Most Democrats have figured out that Hillary is a SHILL for CORPORATE INTERESTS, and that the Clintons are REPUBLICANS in Democrat clothing. She just hasn't gotten the message yet: most Democrats do NOT want yet another Clinton administration. We're still ticked off over the last one. Between NAFTA and GATT, we're all PISSED. Is that so hard to figure out? It's past time she got the message and bowed out of the race, and went back to being the carpetbagging Senator she's been for the last several years.

uh oh..guess we're gonna be seeing more hillary tears.

Remember teenie, this is the Klintons we're talking about.

Over 200 of their adversaries/enemies/detractors/investigators/indiscreet lovers, etc., have died under suspicious or mysterious circs.

The odds of this happening are roughly the same as, oh, I dunno, being sucked up into a UFO and then being crowned Emperor of the galaxy.

So, either some dark lord of the universe is watching over them or, they are political expedients with friends who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and who drive around with shovels in their trunks.

And, not even a major party candidate is safe from the Clinton Curse. And the Clintons and the Pubs want "Bruno" to win the nomination!

When the Pubs wished that the very popular former Governor Of Missouri Mel Carnahan would go away in the hopes of securing the senate seat for John "COVER THAT STATUE'S DIRTY PILLOW!" Ashcroft, (who still lost to the deceased Carnahan) and then when the Pubs hoped that at least 99 senators would be too superstitious to oppose BushCo's invasion of Iraq, well, not one but two planes corkscrewed into the ground. (Mel Carnahan, Paul Wellstone)

Ergo, therefore and in summation, unless Obama is hoofing or bussing to rallies and fund raisers his future is a big ?

The Pubs want to run against Hillary so bad they can taste her blood. Imagine having a truckload of 30 & 60 sec. TV spots about her and Bale, then finding that they're as worthless as a Confederate War Bond!

What are they going to attack Obama with? His lack of experience? His business connections? Shady associates? His religion or race? Even if he got skulled in the back of some limo by a thweet boy, at least he isn't pinned or pledged to him like Bush is to his lifelong sleeping bag buddy from Yale!

The Klintons know that there will be no other opportunity. And, Bill wants to "git at them interns" this go round, not years from now! (as usual Jim Carville will be on hand to call 'em "lying' trailer trash" if any unseemly accusations prove irresistible to Larry Flynt)

No, we're reaching critical mass here. And we may witness a high tech, 21st century, Arkansas-style activation of the TRIPLE K NIGHT RIDERS for a special mission-to deal with this uppity media creation who doesn't have the sense to know not to interfere with President Hillary Howell-Rodham's Manifest Destiny!
