McCain resignation talk swirls, Pederson, Barrett, Shadegg, Flake among possible contenders

The Business Journal of Phoenix - by Mike Sunnucks Phoenix Business Journal

U.S. Sen. John McCain's office Wednesday countered speculation that the Arizona Republican would resign this summer to focus on his presidential bid.

McCain spokeswoman Melissa Shuffield told the Phoenix Business Journal that McCain has "no current plans" to step down from his Senate seat.

A summer resignation could create a mad dash to succeed McCain in the November election. Gov. Janet Napolitano would appoint an interim senator to serve until the November election if McCain resigns. State law requires that appointment to be of the same party as the officeholder.

Business and political sources familiar with the issue already are talking about possible interim contenders, including Phoenix attorneys Grant Woods and Patrick McGroder, McCain aide Deb Gullett and Secretary of State Jan Brewer. Phoenix Congressman John Shadegg -- who just announced he was not running for reelection next year -- also could be in the mix. He is a fiscal conservative generally popular with business interests.

Other possible contenders on the Republican side who could run for McCain's seat include Mesa Congressman Jeff Flake, former congressman and radio commentator J.D. Hayworth, former governor and businessman Fife Symington, businesswoman Barbara Barrett, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters. Flake is allied with business groups on the immigration issue while Hayworth opposes business efforts on the border front.

Possible Democratic contenders include real estate developer Jim Pederson, who lost a U.S. Senate bid in 2006, Phoenix Congressman Ed Pastor and Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard.

Pederson, a major Democratic Party donor, said Wednesday he would consider a Senate run if McCain resigns. Pederson said Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Napolitano also could be contenders.

Napolitano, popular with Arizona CEOs and tech executives, also could end up with a cabinet post if Barack Obama becomes president. She has endorsed the Illinois Democrat.

There are also a number of deep-pocketed business executives who might be recruited for the short election campaign in which personal wealth would be an advantage.

The title really got my hopes up. I thought that maybe he would resign as POTUS candidate. If only...

Shadegg said he wasn't interested when he announced his own decision to not run again.
