WASHINGTON - With all this talk of "suicide voters" - conservatives who are reluctant to back John McCain - conventional wisdom has it that he has to pick a conservative as his running mate to shore up Republican support on the right.

But there's increasing speculation in Washington and among McCain's supporters that the Arizona maverick will instead run to the center and pick a more liberal vice presidential candidate.

This is a strategy that simply won't work for McCain because there is a certain bloc of core, loyal and principled conservatives who will never vote for him no matter what he says now, who he picks to run with, or who the Democratic nominee might be.

That's the category I fall under.

NO MORE RINO's!!

Philip Giraldi thinks McCain will pick Lieberman as his running mate. Looks like that's what this NY Post writer wants.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

Do you think this "dream ticket" would actually carry a state?

It's almost as if the GOP is trying to lose. That ticket is 100%, unequivocally a losing ticket.

Absolutely. If McCain selects Leiberman for a running mate he won't carry a single state.

That ticket will make Dole/Kemp look successful by comparison.
