Secret Service Halts Obama security in Dallas

I find this terrifying...

Evidently, the Secret Service in Dallas gave an order to stop screening for weapons, an hour before Obama took the stage. This was supposedly in order to "expedite" moving the crowd.

More below...

Stop screening for weapons? In Dallas?

Several of the police officers present were very concerned, but did not feel that they could comment because the order came from a Federal agency.

The Dallas Deputy Police Chief said, " It seemed a friendly crowd.."

From another source:

"Apparently the Secret Service was overwhelmed by the size of the crowds. They had set up screenings, but by the time our group made it to the door they were already packing their equipment. I suspect the campaign encouraged them to withdraw to allow the huge volume of humanity into the hall before the speeches started. According to news reports several thousand people who arrived late were turned away as the arena was filled to capacity."

The Secret Service did not return calls from Dallas newspapers.

Sorry this is so brief...I have not yet been able to find more, but will update if I do.

Now...is my concern misplaced? Or is this as worrisome as I think it is...?

The Secret Service did not return a call from the Star-Telegram seeking comment.

Doors opened to the public at 10 a.m., and for the first hour security officers scanned each person who came in and checked their belongings in a process that kept movement of the long lines at a crawl. Then, about 11 a.m., an order came down to allow the people in without being checked.

Several Dallas police officers said it worried them that the arena was packed with people who got in without even a cursory inspection.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because, they said, the order was made by federal officials who were in charge of security at the event.

"How can you not be concerned in this day and age," said one policeman.

The Dallas Deputy Police Chief said, " It seemed a friendly crowd.."

sure, friendly to whom?

Remember the Financial Times profile of Michelle Obama that I posted here last week. According to that piece, Michelle Obama told the reporter that the Secret Service had started providing protection to herself and her husband after they had gotten death threats.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

Maybe they were just sending a message to Obama. This time.

When I went to my college reunion in the fall many friends missed the kickoff to the football game and part of the first quarter because of security and the lines it created. I didn't go to the game.
