It's a redirect. It's common among expired web pages that send you somewhere, maybe to the new updated web page hosted on another site or maybe even to the infamous goatse is the webmaster has a sense of humor.

Seriously. tinyurl is a web host. the /caomg or /b5gpr are directories or personal web sites. They have no content except to redirect you somewhere.

See http://tinyurl.com/ for an explanation. Tinyurl.com is an independent service.

Thanks, I had just found it, but is there a good reason for using it?

Well, I suppose there's a market for the service. Some people might have a web address they want to publicize but which is so long it's hard to remember and type. Long URL's can be a problem when sent by email since the receiving email package might line wrap it onto 2 lines, disabling them. This service can provide an alias URL that points to the same place but is quite small, easy to remember and safe to email.

They might make money by throwing up an advertisement as people click through. Downside is you're trusting them to keep the alias active. They could shut it down when you least expect it.
