AP Release : HOUSTON - Former Texas Gov. Mark White endorsed Sen. Barack Obama Tuesday in his pursuit of the Democratic presidential nomination.White called Obama a visionary who has set forth a superior proposal to reform the health care system. "Barack's vision is exactly what our nation needs right now," White said in a prepared statement. "Right now, Texas has the highest rate of uninsured in the nation. I believe that Barack's health care plan is the answer we've been looking for." White, a conservative Democrat, was elected governor in 1982, defeating Republican Bill Clements. He served four years and was defeated by Clements in 1986. White ran for governor again in 1990, but lost in the Democratic primary to Ann Richards. _ State legislators supporting Sen. Barack Obama took issue with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday over her statement that Texas isn't likely to figure into the general election for the Democrats. "I'd love to carry Texas, but it's usually not in the electoral calculation for the Democratic nominee; Florida and Michigan are," she said in a recent videotaped interview with Texas Monthly. Democratic Reps. Jim Dunnam of Waco, Pete Gallego of Alpine and Garnet Coleman of Houston, all of whom back Obama, said Texas Democrats need a presidential candidate who will try to win Texas and help rejuvenate the state party. "It harkens back to the 1990s, when Texas Democrats were basically abandoned," Dunnam said. Democrats lost all statewide offices in 1998. They later lost total control of the Legislature. The party has been trying to rebuild ever since. The lawmakers said Obama has assured them he would campaign in Texas if he becomes the nominee. They noted that he helped campaign for other candidates in red states in the 2006 elections. `
