Soldier admits having himself shot to avoid Iraq return

02/27/2008 @ 7:01 am

Filed by David Edwards and Muriel Kane

A soldier who claimed to have been shot during a robbery while home from Iraq on emergency family leave has been revealed to have arranged the shooting with a friend.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Army Pfc. Matthew Myers staggered into a mini-mart in Apple Valley, 75 miles northwest of Los Angeles, last Sunday. He called 911 and told the sheriff's office he had been attacked and robbed by an unknown man while walking alongside the Apple Valley Country Club golf course.

Myers was taken to a hospital, but police became suspicious when he claimed it had been too dark for him to describe his assailant. When a search found two parallel sets of footprints, suggesting that Myers and the gunman had been walking together before the shooting, police confronted him with the evidence.

"He admitted it was a setup," Sgt. Todd Newton of the Apple Valley Police told KCAL News. "His friend admitted that he didn't want to go back to Iraq. I believe he was on some sort of emergency military leave. ... He didn't have the guts to do it, so he asked his friend to do it."

Officials intend to file criminal charges against both men, who have been best friends since high school. A military spokesman said that a leg wound like Myers' would not normally be sufficient to cause a soldier to be discharged. However, Myers could be discharged depending on the outcome of the criminal charges.

This video is from KCAL 9, broadcast February 26, 2008.

Story Time!

When I was a young sailor, the destroyer I was stationed on was getting ready to go on a 6 month deployment to the Persian Gulf. There were these two guys that were determined not to go (they'd met a pair of sisters, and were 'in love'), so they decided to break each others leg to avoid sailing with the ship.

One found a cinder block and proceeded to smash it down on his friends leg.

Apparently, the smasher saw how much pain the other guy was in, and chickened out, but he did have the decency to bring his buddy to the naval hospital in Charleston, SC.

It turned out the 'smashed' guy didn't have a broken leg, but one hell of a 'bone bruise', and it layed him up for about 6 weeks...all of which he spent in the restricted barracks on the Charleston Naval Base until he healed up (so he couldn't be with his sweetheart), then the Navy shipped his ass right back to his command.

By then the ship was in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and island known for it's beautiful beaches and topless women.

Anyway, when he got to the ship, the Captain placed him and his buddy on restriction for 45 days, IOW, they couldn't leave the ship to partake in the treasures ashore.

Instead of just accepting their fate, they decided that they would get ashore by hook or by crook. The destroyer was anchored out about a quarter mile from the beach, so they hatched up this idea that they would put dry clothes in a plastic bag, and swim ashore, party all night, then swim back and no one would be the wiser.

They were spotted by the watch before they got 100 yards from the ship, and were promptly hauled back onboard to face the old man again. And the Captain gave them each another 45 days restriction.

After that incident, the crew referred to them as 'SEAL Team 1'.

A side note: Upon the 'smashed' guys departure, the sisters they were so 'in love' with promptly found two more sailors to bed. Women!!

I swear I didn't. It's a small island in the Med.

A sailor would never lie about such things.

Ruined my whole day. Sittin here cryin in me white beard. I just know you are fibbing, you have to be.

I transited so many God awful unknown Pacific Islands that it was horrible.

One was Kwajalein, populated by Navy swabs that had been there toooo long. We knew that because the two swabs that refueled our aircraft called each other by name, Helen and Doris.

The Navy had to throw us a bone, so to speak, because we didn't see hardly any women for the next 3 1/2 months (the Navy women in Bahrain didn't count...too 'Butch'), until our return trip.

On Kwaj it was against the rules for enlisted swine to have booze.

When we were Stateside bound they KNEW we had a plane load of spirits. They were all over the aircraft trying to be helpful, so we always broke out the VO for everyone. One guy had been there for nearly a year, no women and no booze, he cried and I thot he was gonna kiss me for a moment. At that time Seagrams was a buck and a quarter for their best. 1940s/50s
