DRIGGS, Idaho - Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," is serving six months' unsupervised probation after allegedly being caught with marijuana in her car.

She was sentenced Feb. 29 to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving.

Under a plea agreement, three misdemeanor counts — driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance — were dropped.

On Oct. 18, Teton County sheriff's Deputy Joseph Gutierrez arrested Wells as she was driving home from a surprise birthday party that was held for her. According to the sheriff's office report, Gutierrez pulled Wells over after noticing her swerve and repeatedly speed up and slow down. When Gutierrez asked about a marijuana smell, Wells said she'd just given a ride to three hitchhikers and had dropped them off when they began smoking something. Gutierrez found half-smoked joints and two small cases used to store marijuana.

The 69-year-old Wells, founder of the Idaho Film and Television Institute and organizer of the region's annual family movie festival called the Spud Fest, then failed a sobriety test.

Wells' lawyer, Ron Swafford, said that a friend of Wells' testified that he'd left a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle after using it that day, and that Wells was unaware of it. Swafford also said several witnesses were prepared to testify that Wells had very little to drink at the party and was not intoxicated when she left. He said she was swerving on the road because she was trying to find the heater controls in her new car.

I always liked Mary Ann more than Ginger.

If she wasn't 69 years old, I'd be happy to smoke a joint with her and then have sex with her.

I'd have to see what she looks like now...(old) age is not a factor for me anymore, at my age.

Cast details from Wiki....

---------------

* Bob Denver as Gilligan, the bumbling, accident-prone crewman of the S.S. Minnow. Denver was not the first choice to play Gilligan. Actor Jerry Van Dyke was offered the role, but he turned it down, believing that the show would never be successful. He chose instead to play the lead in My Mother the Car, which premiered one season later. The producers then looked to Bob Denver, the actor who played lovable beatnik Maynard G. Krebs in the The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Like Lieutenant Columbo, Gilligan's first name is never mentioned in any episode or TV movie. In an un-aired pilot, the name "Willy Gilligan" is used. Creator/producer Sherwood Schwartz said he had intended the character's name to be "Willy". Bob Denver stated playfully on some interviews, such as a May 16, 1989 KDKA radio interview, that his name choice would have been "Gil Eggan". Denver reasoned that since everyone yelled at him, it came out as Gilligan.

* Alan Hale, Jr. as Jonas Grumby, the "Skipper". A longtime actor in B-westerns, Hale so loved his role that, long after the show went off the air, he would still appear in character in his Los Angeles restaurant, Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel. Although the Skipper was a father figure to Gilligan, Hale was only 14 years older than Denver. It is alluded in one episode that Gilligan pushed the Skipper out of the way of a loose depth-charge when they were both serving in the United States Navy.

* Jim Backus as Thurston Howell, III, the greedy millionaire. Backus was already a well-known actor when he took the part. He was perhaps best known as the voice of the cartoon character Mr. Magoo. He reused some of the voice inflections and mannerisms of Magoo in the role. He was well known for his ad-libs on the set.

* Natalie Schafer as Eunice "Lovey" Wentworth Howell, Thurston's wife. Schafer had it written into her contract that there were to be no close-ups of her, perhaps due to her advanced age. Schafer was 62 when the pilot was shot although, reportedly, no one on the set or in the cast knew her real age, and she refused to divulge that information. Originally, she only accepted the role because the pilot was filmed on location in Hawaii. She looked at the job as nothing more than a free vacation, as she was convinced that a show this silly would "never go". [1]

* Tina Louise as Ginger Grant, the movie star. When regular shooting began, Louise clashed with producers, because she had believed that she was to be the main focus of the show (despite its title). In addition, her character was originally written as a sarcastic and sharp-tongued temptress, but Louise argued that this was too extreme and refused to play it as written. A compromise was reached; Louise agreed to play her as a cross between Marilyn Monroe and Lucille Ball. The evening gowns and hair style used were designed to recreate the look of Myrna Loy. Louise continued to clash with producers and was the only cast member who refused to return for any of the TV movies that followed the series' cancellation, and the fourth season, which was later canceled to make room for a western, saying that the role had destroyed her career as a serious actress. However, she did appear in a reunion of the cast on a late night TV talk show in 1988 and on an episode of Roseanne in 1995. In the first season, Ginger often wore gowns that looked as if they were tailored from S.S. Minnow tarps or similar ersatz cloth (some had the name of the vessel stenciled on them). Later on, she wore regular evening gowns. (It was never explained why she brought so many changes of clothing on a "three-hour tour.")

* Russell Johnson as Roy Hinkley (The Professor). John Gabriel was originally cast, but the network thought he looked too young to have all the degrees attributed to the Professor. Incongruously, "the Professor" was in fact a high school science teacher, not a university professor. In the first episode, the radio announcer described him as a research scientist and well-known Scoutmaster. Johnson stated that he had some difficulty remembering his more technically-oriented lines.

* Dawn Wells as Mary Ann Summers. Wells was a former Miss Nevada when she auditioned for the role. Her competition included Raquel Welch. The pilot episode had a different character played by a different actress. After it was shot, the network decided to recast the roles of the Professor and the two young women.

* Charles Maxwell was the uncredited voice of the "Radio Announcer", whose plot-advancing radio bulletins were eagerly tuned in to by the castaways in many episodes.

---------------

I never knew Mr Howell was Mr. Magoo! Mary Ann was Miss Nevada??

And this footnote was interesting... Guess I had it right as a kid.

---------------

Ginger or Mary Ann?

The question of which one men prefer, and to a lesser extent, who women view themselves to be more like, has endured long after the end of the series.[10][11] It has inspired videos[12] and even the occasional sermon.[13] By most accounts, the wholesome, low-maintenance Mary Ann has consistently outpolled the glamorous but demanding Ginger since the very beginning.[10][11]

Possibly. Then again, had he taken the role of Gilligan, his prediction may have come to pass. There's no saying how the Skipper/Gilligan chemistry might have played out without Bob Denver. It's hard to imagine it would have been better.

Notice how most all of us give almost no concern about Mary Ann being charged with a crime. It's like it's a foregone conclusion that if you are an American, then you will be pushed through the criminal system. Getting arrested is as American as baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie.

I think it's burnout from seeing what Bush & Co. are getting away with. What's the big deal with Dawn Wells or Willie Nelson smoking a little hootch on the side? My only beef is that it probably sends mexico some money at some point. If it was grown here I wouldn't be concerned at all.

So what happens in Ecuador if you are popped by the local cops for a small amount of pot.

You offer them $30 bucks each to go away, and promise not to do it again. Of course you need be no more honest than the cops.

Some might call that bribery. Others might call it a negotiated fine, or a plea agreement, made on the spot. Still others might call it "life". Down here you gain a perspective about what government really is, and it's nothing more than the guy with the biggest gun, and it's true throughout the world and throughout history. And if you can keep the government off your back by any means at all, then the proper term for that is "good citizenry". Again, true throughout the world.

He got a cop fired in a ridiculous little "town" in south St. Louis county called St. George. It's one-fifth of a mile square, and recently the mayor got arrested for (I think) child porn on his computer.

Even the few residents there said the police department is a joke.
