Despite the fact that Billo says he’s the only guy out there courageous enough (*cough, cough*) to talk about Barack Obama’s relationship with Trinity UCC’s Rev. Jeremiah Wright, there wasn’t much else of discussion on Hannity & Colmes on Friday night. In fact, I’d say that the outrage was proportionate to the number of wingnuts brought on to discuss it. Nevertheless, co-host Alan Colmes and Democratic strategist Bob Beckell manage to inject some semblance of sanity to the predictions of the end of Obama’s chance for the White House. C&L contributer Heather made this mash up of Friday’s show. It’s amazing to me that people responsible for injecting so much hate into the national dialogue have their knickers in a twist over some isolated statements by Rev. Wright, who while admittedly inflammatory in his framing, is not factually wrong in what he said, and certainly not more hate-filled than Jesus Camp. Does Hannity, Fleischer, Morgan & Co. think that they have market cornered on hate and just fear the competition? Note that not one of those right wingers outraged–outraged, I tell you!–addresses that Obama has disavowed what Rev. Wright has said nor that just as inflammatory and intolerant rhetoric has come out of the mouths of Revs. Rod Parsley and John Hagee, whose endorsements John McCain has actively sought without feeling it necessary to distance himself from their more extreme statements. Actually, very little by way of sanity is even part of the discussion, this is, after all, FOX News.

Rev. Wright's not saying anything Noam Chomsky hasn't been saying for years. He just says it scarier.
Louis Farrakhan and the Rev. Wright encourage the Black community to be self-reliant. This seems to upset some white folks.

If that was all that they did, nobody would care. Unfortunately, both of these so-called "holy men" blame whitey for everything, including the fact that their kids don't want to go to school - something that is entirely their own fault.

About the Rev. Jeremiah Wright The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, 66, retired last month as pastor of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ, whose motto is "unashamedly black and unapologetically Christian." He is a beloved figure in African-American Christian circles and a frequent guest in pulpits around the country. After arriving at Trinity in 1972, he built a 6,000-member congregation. His preaching melds detailed scriptural analysis, black power, Afrocentrism and an emphasis on social justice. Wright's most powerful influence, said several ministers and scholars who have followed his career, is black liberation theology, which interprets the Bible as a guide to combating oppression of African Americans. He attracts audiences because of, not in spite of, his outspoken critiques of racism and inequality, Dwight Hopkins, a professor at University of Chicago Divinity School, said last year. Wright's defenders said the statements that have been playing this week are taken out of context, and he is not anti-white. The United Church of Christ, the denomination of the Chicago church, is overwhelmingly white. And Wright is an equal-opportunity critic, often delivering scorching lectures about black society, telling audiences to improve their educations and work ethic. "I can remember Jeremiah saying in probably half his sermons: Everyone who's your color ain't your kind," Richard Sewell, a church member, said last year. On Friday, the United Church of Christ (UCC) issued a 1,400-word statement defending Wright and his "flagship" congregation. It lauded Wright's church for its community service and work to nurture young people and the pastor for speaking out against homophobia and sexism in the black community. "It's time for all of us to say no to these attacks and to declare that we will not allow anyone to undermine or destroy the ministries of any of our congregations in order to serve their own narrow political or ideological ends," said John Thomas, UCC's president.

When I was growing up there was one family on my block who considered the late Martin Luther King "a troublemaker". They also were the only family who used the word nigger. This happens to a lot of "uppity Blacks".

If Obama can explain to middle America what Pastor Wright means when he shouts, "African diaspora" struggles under the yoke of the "white supremacists" who run the "American empire", he might have a chance at the ring.
I'm pretty sure that's one of the statements that Barack has repudiated. Louis Farrakhan has a more accurate picture of who runs America.

Unfortunately the repudiation comes after the damage. This pokes a huge hole in the USS Obama. Such is the stuff of Clinton politics.
It's nothing that McCain would not use later. Obama needs to learn to deal with this association, or rather guilt by association. Hillary insisted once that he denounce something and he said he rejected it. It was all a lot of word games. McCain needs to learn to deal with a lot of associations, Keating Five, helping foreign companies get huge deals, like Airbus. He has a long corrupt past, I'm sure it will all be dug up before November.

McCain isn't going to win the general. This is all about Obama getting the nomination, IMO.
I'm no longer sure of anything. Michigan is a do-over, and Hillary may win. Florida may be a do-over also, and Hillary could win. The convention superdelegates will determine the nominee. As the economy continues to crumble and world events get nastier, it is possible this could help Hillary, b/c the Clinton years were considerably more stable than the Bush years.

The do-over in Michigan isn't a 'done deal' yet and has a major hurdle to jump. The Michigan Senate, which is republican, has to approve the new election and there are no guarantees they will do that. It is in the GOP's interest to see the nomination fight go clear to the convention thus fracturing the Democratic party even more than it already is. Stay tuned...

There are plenty of educated racists out there. My contention is this - if all of these so-called leaders are out there talking to tens of thousands, then why are there little to no results? There is more here than meets the eye. It doesn't add up.

If one excerpts MLK, he can sound like a rabble-rousing troublemaker.
Really? Compare illegitimacy rate from the 1960s to today. 70% today? That is a complete and total failure. Dropout rates are through the roof and INCREASING each and every year. Incarceration rates are blowing through the roof. Black on Black violence is escalating all over the country. If there is a success in there anywhere, it is buried as the statistics show utter failure all around.

MLK did one thing that NONE of the current rabble has done. He involved himself personally at all levels. He didn't just deliver speeches; he got involved in peoples' lives personally everywhere he went and he checked back with people. There is more to being a leader than just standing in front of a microphone. The current crop appears to have completely forgotten that.

But recent research has kept the argument alive. A 2005 study by the Justice Department found that while Hispanic, black and white drivers were stopped by the police about as often, Hispanic drivers or their vehicles were searched 11.4 percent of the time and blacks 10.2 percent of the time, compared with 3.5 percent for white drivers. Data collected from state courts by the Justice Department also shows that a higher percentage of black felons than white felons receive prison sentences for nearly all offenses, and also that blacks receive longer maximum sentences for most offenses.
