St. Patrick's Day – Celebrating the Green

St. Patrick is believed to have driven the snakes from Ireland. Once a pagan himself, St. Patrick is one of Christianity's most widely known figures.

The modern secular holiday is based on the original Christian saint's feast day also thought to be the date of the saint's death. In 1737, Irish immigrants to the United States began observing the holiday publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City in 1766.

Today, the tradition continues with people from all walks and heritages by wearing green, eating Irish food, and attending parades. St. Patrick's Day is bursting with folklore; from the shamrock to the leprechaun and to pinching those that are not wearing green. MORE

ERIN GO BUY: ST. PATRICK'S DAY SPENDING

St. Patty's Day Buys

There'll be plenty of green this St. Patrick's Day: The National Retail Federation predicts consumers will spend $3.64 billion on the holiday, down from $3.76 billion in 2007. The expected sales dip is chalked up to the fact that St. Patrick's Day falls just a week before Easter this year. But there's still lots of St. Patrick's Day stuff to go around: Novelty vendor Jerry Roberts, of Hagerstown, Md., sold everything from plush puppies to green garters during a holiday parade in Hoboken, N.J. on March 1. We did it before, we can do it again.

How the Irish Saved Civilization.

On the last, cold day of December in the dying year we count as 406, the river Rhine froze solid, providing the natural bridge that hundreds of thousands of hungry men, women, and children had been waiting for. They were the barbari - to the Romans an undistinguished, matted mass of Others, not terrifying, just troublemakers, annoyances, things one would rather not have to deal with - non-Romans.

Question Diversity.

In this delightful and illuminating look into a crucial but little-known "hinge" of history, Thomas Cahill takes us to the "island of saints and scholars," the Ireland of St. Patrick and the Book of Kells. Here, far from the barbarian despoliation of the continent, monks and scribes laboriously, lovingly, even playfully preserved the West's written treasury. When stability returned in Europe, these Irish scholars were instrumental in spreading learning, becoming not only the conservators of civilization, but also the shapers of the medieval mind, putting their unique stamp on Western culture.

That looks like a fun/good book.

The old country, I love it. If you ever see it, grab Leon and Jill Uris' book, 'Ireland, a Terrible Beauty.' It has excellent general and historical commentary on Ireland by Leon and great pictures of the land and people by his wife.

It was published in the S, but it is fascinating. Leon Uris is an incredible author, one of my all time favorites.

This holiday is especially sweet with the retirement of Northern Ireland hatemonger Ian Paisley.

I'm sure that's true, and I wasn't aware of that news. "terrible beauty" looks like a very good recommendation, thanks.
