The media has been on board cheerleading Bush's big "save my approval ratings" speech all day. CNN has been pounding the table on all the positive developments in Iraq. Not hearing much about the big Chinook that went down in Afghanistan today though, and the story of all the female marines that were killed over the weekend was dropped like a hot potato. The situation is even worse than we think it is and the nitwit is up there taking bows for the progress. Maybe we are doomed.
Bush does appear to be under control. Never has a President changed so much between his 1st election and his actions in office. Recently, Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton conducted themselves in office as the public expected their behavior matched their campaign rhetoric, for the most part.
Then we have Bush- a lifelong moderate conservative in his father's vein. A lifetime of political beliefs cannot be changed at his age- and certainly not so many in such a short period of time.
Bush was a conservative, got into office and became a Marxist, so much so that he even attacks the middle class. Bush was an isolationist, opposed to the Kosovo 'war' for example, then became an interventionist committed to building an American Empire. Bush favored a border with Mexico as gov of Texas and increased funding for BP, then as Pres calls for open borders, basically an end to US sovereignty with his extreme globalism, and fights to cut funding for BP- or at least reduce it to less than Congress suggested.
As a conservative, Bush must have believed in the philosophy of the founding fathers regarding the individual. But when he gets into office, he does all he can to advance a police state and take away rights individuals have had in the US for 100's of years.
That's just for starters. The question is How could Bush change his positions on so many issues this late in his life? Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton didn't.
I'm completely baffled by Bush's behavior in the last few years. The idea that he is following orders received via transmitter, or that he is parroting rhetoric he is told via transmitter, almost sounds possible at this point.
Not hearing much about the big Chinook that went down in Afghanistan today though,
Maybe we are doomed.
The latest I heard on that Chinook was that the Taliban was taking credit for it falling out of the sky. The CNN reporter added that "Of course we've heard no corroboration of that from the Pentagon," as if the Pentagon would say, "Yeah, they shot it down," or something. There's a lot of circumstantial and grudging info from the Pentagon that things aren't all that peachy in Afghanistan.
I think doomed is too strong a word. I'd say that, barring a huge increase in troop levels (and in my mind it's around 250-400K more needed to really pacify Iraq) we'll need to leave Iraq, either in orderly fashion, (think Soviets from Afghanistan, 1989) or less than orderly fashion (think Saigon, 1975). Despite all the rhetoric, I think there is very little reason to believe that they really hate us for our freedoms. A pull back and a resumption of a George Washington type of policy (or a policy like William Lind has posited, a detachment from places of disorder) will cause the attacks against us to virtually cease (I think there's still possibility of attacks here, but the incentive would be largely removed.) Because they hate us because we're over there, once our presence is gone, they could go back to warring amongst themselves, like has happened since Christ was a corporal.
oops, I just saw this. After seeing his behavior on 911, in the classroom, it occurred to me that he was receiving mind control messages when andy card approached him and whispered in his ear. Did you see his eyes and facial expression? It was downright eerie.

If our commanders on the ground say we need more troops, I will send them. But our commanders tell me they have the number of troops they need to do their job.
Maybe because when you fire the commanders like Gen. Shinseki who say more troops are needed, the rest of the commanders get the message.
LBJ used to refuse Westmoreland's troop requests, then go on TV and say he was providing everything the military requested.
If our commanders on the ground say we need more troops, I will send them.
There was a Senator (Harkin?) on ABC after the speech that stated he just came back from over there and every single General in charge over there without exception stated they needed more troops.

I missed the Chimperor's routine this evening because I fell asleep on the couch. From what I've read here, it sounds like Rove just did a cut and paste of the most tired sound bites.
It would also seem that this little dog and pony show of his this evening met with the same enthusiasm people would have for discovering a turd in a swimming pool. I've been channel hopping all of the "news" networks, even fox, and I have not seen one clip from this speech. You can tell that the few party hacks who drew the short straw and had to go out and say how "great" this speech was seem very restrained. Most stations went back to the missing white girl of the month and/or shark attacks.
"Away with you, demon...the power of Elvis compels you!"
Let's not forget Rush (I got a boil on my ass) or Newt, etc etc etc
It's the old routine -- Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, Lewis and Martin, the Bowery Boys, etc. -- where the smart guy tries to talk the dumb guy into being the one to do the dangerous thing by praising him and telling him how brave he is.
The President spoke tonight???? Sorry I missed that. (sarcasm) I was glued to ESPN watching the NBA Draft. I had to see where the kids in Baby Blue (UNC Tar Heels) went this evening. Scooter is going to have to reconsidet watching NBA games now that two of UNC's finest are now Charlotte Bobcats.
What did I miss? (more sarcasm)
I understand the terrorists are in their last throes. That we are progressing in Iraq daily. This war is important. Our cause is just. Afterall, we were attacked on 9/11 because of hatred for our precious freedoms and we can no longer sit idly by as terrorist regimes plot their next move in Iraq or any other place harboring terrorism. I am so relieved we have a great man of faith in the White House in W. I am honored he stands tall for America and does not lower himself to the vicious and venomous assaults and insults hurled at him by the America-hating left. (heavy, dripping sarcasm)

That pretty much sums it up in a nutshell. Very Good ;)

Third, we are working with the Iraqi Ministries of Interior and Defense to improve their capabilities to coordinate anti-terrorist operations.
Of course, the US has some experience in that area, having worked with the Iraqis in the Iran-Iraq war to provide them with targeting information for poison gas operations against the Iranians.
Afterall, we were attacked on 9/11 because of hatred for our precious freedoms and we can no longer sit idly by as terrorist regimes plot their next move in Iraq or any other place harboring terrorism.
I am especially fond of this sentence. I worked hard attempting to combine as many of the talking points as possible in one complete, coherrent statement.
So we will fight them there ... we will fight them across the world - and we will stay in the fight until the fight is won.
Please. Bush as Churchill?
"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."
Afterall, we were attacked on 9/11 because of hatred for our precious freedoms
It still blows my mind that Bush said that the terrorists wanted to take away our freedom. And then a few short months later he took away some of our freedoms with The Patriot Act and by establishing the precedent that a US citizen could be held without charges in an unknown location indefinitely with no access to legal counsel. Then more by setting up the DHS, passing what is generally called Patriot II, hiring Primakov to set up national ID, etc.
