I've been reading the reviews this morning and there seems to be a universal agreement that Bush's speech last night sucked mongo donkey weenie. Badeye, in his own special way, seems to agree, i.e., he says that snap polls arn't to be trusted, but that some magical event will make things better next week. Or better still, maybe people will forget about the speech by next Tuesday. I'm glad to see we're all on the same page here. Soon we'll all be holding hands and singing. I FORCED myself to watch and hear that dreck last evening: Mrs.L had to leave the room as I alternated between laughter and screams at the lying chimperor. From the expressions on the faces of our military there, it seemed like if they had their sidearms with them, we might had another pres today...they were NOT buying the bravo sierra either.
I love it when this guy comments on issues using the term 'we' as the subject. A real neocon team player. He also uses it in a way that seems to indicate that he sees himself as an important analyst of sorts.

On a thread yesterday, Defender capitalized "His" (meaning "Bush's"). I asked him if Bush is his God, but he claims it was just a typo.

I agree with Badeye. I thought he did wonderfully.. (Well, for Dubya anyway.. These things ARE relative) IMO, he got his "message" across in spades. The problem I saw was the message itself. It's essentially the same message (although revised slightly, to take the emphasis off WMD's) that he's been spouting since the beginning. Iraq is a threat, fight them there or in our streets, spreading freedom/nation building, the Iraqui's are showing progress, stay the course, be afraid, Remember 9/11! It's the same thing.. As one very astute 4UM poster commented to me last night.. these are all "Scrabble" speeches. You just take the same words & phrases, mix them up, and package them as a different speech entirely. That being the case, I don't see how it will make much of a difference in his approval or approval for the war. If it's all the same material, the same "message" and the same speech. How CAN it help?
Bush's claims about fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here will be problematic if he ever has to reduce the forces in Iraq or perhaps pull them out. How will he explain to Americans that he is taking actions that will likely result in the terrorists being 'freed up', and thus able to fight us over here? Only a plane ticket will stand between us at that point.
He will count on the short memory of the American people the power of his propaganda machine to confuse the issue. No problem at all.
I don't know. But if I had to guess, however.. I'd say he'll use the word "Freedom" a few hundred times and then claim that the newly liberated people of Iraq are now ready, willing and capable of managing the terrorist threat. This makes us the winners! Victory! hoo-rah! In fact the terrorists are so scared they're leaving Iraq and moving into Iran, thus forcing us to act there.. Seeing as how that's where the threat now lies and all manner of everything like that. ?
My thoughts exactly. Simple repetition of what is already not working and what his talking heads have been saying incessantly. Nothing motivational about it and no new details to help gain buy-in from people who are on the fence. How could a person who has been hearing that same exact blather for months change their mind after hearing it one more time? They won't. If anything, it will invigorate those opposed to the war now that he's confirmed that there is no additional justification or information to validate it.
One cannot say Iraq is a threat and then at the same time say we must train Iraqis militarily (which wouldn't even be necessary had the "coalition" not disbanded the Iraqi army two years ago). If Iraqis in particular and Arabs in general are some sort of permanent threat, you would want to disarm them of even the most innocuous weapons. There is an incredible amount of cognitive dissonance in his entire message, but fortunately for him his "base" is totally lacking in critical thinking skills. All of their actions in life are prompted by their reptilian brains. What he is really desperately hoping for is the creation of a viable puppet army beholden and loyal to its Zionist masters. And I just don't see that happening in our lifetimes.

It reminds me a lot of Clinton after Waco labeling all "patriots" and "right-wing talk show hosts" as enemies of the state. Bush may not mean to label ordinary Iraqis as "terrorists" but enough of them have been "collaterally damaged" by now that that is no doubt how ordinary Iraqis see it. You hardly ever see the U.S. soldiers mingle with the "ordinary Iraqis" anymore, because both sides know either could go off at any time and that's because of all the innocent blood that has been shed. Of course, no soldier of an invasion or occupation force is technically "innocent" but I think they do instinctively know deep down inside that they shouldn't still have to be occupying that $hithole more than two years after it started. So that's where a lot of the trigger-happiness comes from. They'd rather waste 100 Iraqi women and children than have even one of their buddies bite the big one, particularly since the entire war was sold on false premises and Big Lie rhetoric.

There was actually one subtle policy shift in the words of Bush. He now distinguishes between the kinds of anti-Iraqi forces. There are: 1) Foreign fighter terrorists. 2) Baathist dead enders. 3) Criminals and thugs. 4) and the new group "insurgents" who we apparently can negotiate with.

I should know one from the other but I hardly ever listen to them anymore. Frankly, they were both fairly Bottish, but one more so; he said all arabs are crazies. Then he gave this pitiful explanation about why they haven't snuck over the border to terrorize us, preferring to fight our troops in Iraq.

Which reminds me, the Pentagon released stats months ago, that at least 95% of the insurgents are Iraqis, yet Smirk continues the lie that there are all these foreigners fighting in Iraq. Pouring over the border from Syria. Well then why aren't they pouring over our Mexican border?
