FITSNews - March 31, 2008 - Feeding off of conservative discontent with Republican presidential nominee John McCain, former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr will announce a third party bid for the White House next week, sources tell FITSNews.

Barr, who will run as a Libertarian, is also slated to receive the the endorsement of Texas Congressman Ron Paul, the only Republican presidential candidate who has yet to cease campaign operations and jump on the McCain bandwagon.

Just last week, Paul threw more cold water on the notion of his supporters backing McCain, telling Newsweek, “I’m not going to tell them what to do, but I honestly can’t imagine any of them supporting him. That would be a tough sale.”

Barr, who represented Georgia’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House from 1995-2003, is perhaps best known for his role as a House Manager during impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton.

From the looks of it, Barr and Paul already seem to have something of a “mutual admiration society” going.

Last week, Barr specifically praised Paul’s campaign in discussing his own flirtation with the Presidency, telling the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that his potential Libertarian bid for the White House would be an extension of the Ron Paul movement.

“Ron Paul tapped into a great deal of that dissatisfaction and that awareness. Unfortunately, working through the Republican party structure, it became impossible for him to really move forward with his movement. But we have to have ….a rallying point out there to harness that energy, that freedom in this election cycle,” Barr told the newspaper.

Good for Barr.

If it became impossible for RP to move forward with his movement, thanks to the Republican party structure, this entire BS effort by some to infiltrate and change a party from within is smoke. Just as some of us always said.

The only problem with Bob Bar is that he voted for the patriot act. Has he since denounced it? He needs to give a real good explanation as to his thinking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Barr Since leaving Congress in 2003, Barr has become a vocal opponent of the Patriot Act and has stated that he regrets voting for it, claiming that the Bush Administration has used it to further erode due process even in nonterrorism matters. He claims that the Clinton administration did much of the same thing.[11] In 2005--the year the Patriot Act was due for renewal he helped found an organization called Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances, a bipartisan group dedicated to eliminating aspects of the Patriot Act that could potentially affect law-abiding citizens rather than terrorists, and to "restore traditional checks and balances on government power so the country can effectively fight terror without sacrificing the rights of innocent Americans, rights that are guaranteed by the Constitution."[14] Barr still serves as the group's chairman.

Ron Paul wasn't defeated for voting against it. I don't think Barr would have been either. I like a leader with convictions.

I could give Barr a pass on this though. I don't know why though, because I don't give anyone else a pass on it.

Maybe it's old age, but why do I remember Barr as being a contemptible pos ever since junior stole the presidency?
