Obama: My wife sees need for rural gun ownership by John McCormick

HARLAN, Iowa -- From his days of campaigning in Downstate Illinois, Sen. Barack Obama has been asked plenty of times about his views on gun ownership.

But the Illinois Democrat and presidential candidate added a new wrinkle Saturday night while campaigning in conservative-leaning western Iowa, when he said his Chicago-native wife, Michelle, recently commented that she could see why rural folks might want to own guns.

Here was Obama's discussion of gun ownership and his wife's thoughts during a campaign stop at a middle school:

"We should be able to combine respect for those traditions with our concern for kids who are being shot down. This is a classic example of us just applying some common sense, just being reasonable, right? And reasonable would say that lawful gun owners – I respect the Second Amendment. I think lawful gun owners should be able to hunt, be sportsmen, protect their families.

"And by the way, Michelle, my wife, she was traveling up, I think, in eastern Iowa, she was driving through this nice, beautiful area, going through all this farmland and hills and rivers and she said 'Boy, it's really pretty up here,' but she said, 'But you know, I can see why if I was living out here, I'd want a gun. Because, you know, 911 is going to take some time before somebody responds. You know what I mean? You know, it's like five miles between every house.'

Poster Comment:

Michelle worries about violent urban crime, but doesn't feel the need to own a handgun in the city. Rather, she'd want one if she lived in a rural area. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, violent crimes are 50 percent more likely in urban areas than in suburban or rural communities. You're clearly much safer--all things being equal--out in the country than you are in Chicago. And of course, this is another instance where if the shoe were on the other foot--if a white woman said she might want a gun for protection if she lived in Chicago--well, you know how that would look.

Dial 911 and die.

I called 911 once when I though someone was breaking into a building I was working in late one night. Turned out it was another cleaner from a different office who was trying to unjam a stuck door. Good thing that's all it was because THE POLICE NEVER SHOWED UP!

I feel safe.

But then that one time I set the alarm off by accident and have three different people call the police to let then know it's a false alarm; 5 minutes later a fellow employee is looking down the barrel of a loaded Glock 17.

He said his Chicago-native wife, Michelle, recently commented that she could see why rural folks might want to own guns.

Of course rural folk want guns. Farmers and land owners always take it tough when Bolsheviks rise to power.

Urban Warfare Center Intro

Here we see well-financed efforts to shift the balance of power in urban combat scenarios. ( http://www.urbanwarfarecenter.com/.)
Force on force paintball technology is used to train soldiers and law enforcement in an urban environment. Milsim scenarios take place.
Of course urban dwellers don't need firearms. The government, and its contractors, will have plenty.

THE POLICE NEVER SHOWED UP!

A liquor store buddy of mine who was armed robbed by two YBMs called 911. Thirty minutes the police showed. I watched the video, it was true, and he was just opposite the Olympic Training Center on a major road in the middle of Colorado Springs.

I think most of them are, but they don't realize it yet. They believe they're fighting (and in some cases, many cases losing life and limb) for our security, and our liberty.

If they would only ask a few more questions.

And Michelle Obama is frightened in the sticks?

In Chicago, Youth Violence Prompts Clampdown - 22 Students Slain So Far This Year; City's Public Schools Get Security Cameras and Extra Police

By Kari Lydersen

Washington Post Staff Writer

Wednesday, April 2, 2008; A02

CHICAGO -- Chavez Clarke, 18, had spent this past Saturday taking catch-up classes so he could graduate on time. As he left a South Side high school that afternoon, he was fatally shot, in broad daylight and in plain view of other students. His death marked a grim end to a week when police and school officials had stepped up their efforts to combat a spike in killings of public school students.

The day before, an eighth-grader at a North Side school was shot and killed.

In all, 20 Chicago public school students have been fatally shot so far this school year -- seven in March alone -- compared with 24 the year before, said spokesman Mike Vaughn. Including those who died in non-gun violence, 22 students have been killed this year, and 30 last school year. School officials could not provide precise figures, but said that killings had increased markedly over past years
