Pro-life activists say Sen. Barack Obama's abysmal record on abortion issues is reflected by his remark that he would not want his daughters to be "punished with a baby" if they were to make a "mistake" as teenagers.

"He would want his own grandchild aborted. It shows a real callous disregard for human life," said David Osteen, executive director of National Right to Life. "This is a window into his soul."

The criticism follows continued scrutiny of Mr. Obama's longtime relationship with a pastor known for racially incendiary sermons, as national polls show him in a neck-and-neck race with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor said the candidate's comment should not be interpreted as condoning abortions.

"What Senator Obama said and what he believes is clear: Children are 'miracles,' but we have a problem when so many children are having children," he said.

"Parents have a responsibility to teach their children about values and morals to help make sure they are not treating sex casually. And while he understands the passions on both sides of this difficult issue, Senator Obama believes we can all agree that we should be taking steps to reduce the number of teen pregnancies and abortions in this country."

Mr. Vietor also tried to lay to rest questions about Mr. Obama's familiarity with a 1960s book linked to his church — "Black Theology and Black Power" by James H. Cone — that espouses anti-white views.

"Senator Obama didn't read this book," Mr. Vietor said. "What is clear is that The Washington Times is more interested in rehashing an old story and playing 'gotcha' games than seriously covering this campaign."

"This is a window into his soul."

Too late, he sold that LONG ago...Marxists can reclaim them but it's a long haul.

I never vote for or against a candidate on the basis of abortion but this issue will be hammered home against him in the general election:

As a state senator, he voted for a law that would define any baby mistakenly born during an abortion as a fetus which would mean that the baby could legally be killed and thrown into an incinerator.

He also voted as a U.S. Senator to increase foreign aid by 850 billion dollars between now and 2015.

He has too much baggage. He is lucky he is running against an elderly man.

Anyone that tolerates the murder of unborn babies, set aside waxing evil-eloquence on the subject, is not capable of being respectable.

Anyone that can't get murder right can not be trusted...

The Roe MAJORITY consisted of 5 GOP nominees and and 2 DEM nominees. The MINORITY consisted of 1 GOP nominee and 1 DEM nominee.

With 5 GOP nominees in the majority, not one DEM nominee was needed to make up a majority.

The majority of Americans OPPOSE making ALL abortion unlawful. A majority clearly favors lawful abortion in the case of rape, incest, or when the life of the woman is endangered.

Abortion statistics by race are given at www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss4911a1.htm#tab14

The below source lists many pages of polls on abortion. Typically, they show that only about 15% of Americans favor an outright ban on abortion. A majority opposes giving the government authority to make the decision.

"Which of the following best represents your views about abortion? The choice on abortion should be left up to the woman and her doctor. Abortion should be legal only in cases in which pregnancy results from rape or incest or when the life of the woman is at risk. OR, Abortion should be illegal in all circumstances."
