U.S. B-52 bomber explodes on landing in Qatar: Jazeera

Fri Apr 4, 2008 3:13pm EDT

DUBAI (Reuters) - A U.S. B-52 bomber exploded while landing in a Qatari air base due to a technical fault on Friday, Qatar-based Al Jazeera television reported.

The television did not say if anyone was hurt in the incident at the base south of the Qatari capital Doha.

A U.S. air force spokesman said he had no immediate report of such an incident and would check.

Reuters has corrected the report. Turns out it was a B-1: U.S. B-1 bomber explodes on landing in Qatar: Jazeera .

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

updated 4:01 p.m. EDT, Thu March 27, 2008

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates has formally ordered the Air Force, Navy and Defense Logistics Agency to conduct an inventory of all U.S. nuclear weapons and nuclear weapon-related materials to make sure all items are accounted for, according to a Pentagon memo released Thursday.

The order comes in the wake of the discovery last week that four nuclear warhead fuses were accidentally shipped to Taiwan in 2006.

Gates' memo, issued Wednesday, calls for all items to be accounted for by serial number.

Pentagon officials said at a news conference Tuesday that Gates would call for the review in addition to a full investigation into how the shipment to Taiwan from a Defense Logistics Agency warehouse happened 18 months ago.

The inventory review, which will involve thousands of items, is due to Gates in 60 days. Pentagon officials said the request was ordered, in part, because this latest incident comes after the August 2007 accidental flight of six nuclear- tipped cruise missiles on a B-52 bomber across the country.

"At a minimum, your report should include the results of the inventory and your personal assessment of the adequacy of your respective department or agency's positive inventory control policies and procedures," Gates said in the memo.

Four officers --- including three colonels -- were relieved of duty last year after a B-52 bomber mistakenly carried six nuclear warheads from North Dakota to Louisiana, the Air Force said.

A six-week investigation uncovered a "lackadaisical" attention to detail in day- to-day operations at the bases involved in the incident, an Air Force report said.

Another safety investigation has begun at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, this time to determine why a B-1B Lancer bomber collided last week with two emergency vehicles on the base’s taxiway.

The bomber was stopped on the taxiway, and the aircrew had exited, when it rolled and hit two fire trucks, according to Andersen spokesman Capt. Joel Stark.

No one was injured, Stark said.

The aircraft, assigned to Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., was in transit from an air show in Singapore. It took off from Andersen around mid-day Friday, Stark said, but returned due to an in- flight emergency.

Stark said Monday he was still researching what that in-flight emergency was, but added “in-flight emergencies as precautions are not unusual.”

The bomber had landed safely and was on the taxiway when the collision occurred, Stark said.

The extent of damage to the aircraft has not been determined, he said.

The aircraft was not carrying munitions.

The jet is worth an estimated $283.1 million, according to a U.S. Air Force fact sheet.

A team from Andersen has begun an interim investigation into the collision, Stark said.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the crash of a B-2 stealth bomber upon take- off on Andersen’s runway on Feb. 23 continues, Stark said.

The bat-like stealth bomber, valued between $1.2 and $2 billion, was a total loss.

An Air Force safety board on the island looking into that incident has 30 days to investigate.

The “Spirit of Kansas” was one of four B-2s deployed to Guam from the 509th bomb Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.
