STEELTON, Penn. -- Democrat Barack Obama lashed out Sunday at rival Hillary Rodham Clinton, mocking her sudden vocal support for gun rights and saying he understands the concerns of working class people.

"She knows better. Shame on her. Shame on her," Obama told an audience at a union hall here.

The Illinois senator has spent two days on the defensive after comments he made at a San Francisco fundraiser suggesting working class people are bitter about their economic circumstances and "cling to guns and religion" as a result. Clinton has pounded him for the remarks, calling him "elitist and divisive."

After reiterating his regret for his choice of words, Obama turned the tables on Clinton _ noting that she accepted campaign contributions from drug and insurance company lobbyists and mocking, among other things, her sudden fealty to the rights of gun owners.

"She is running around talking about how this is an insult to sportsmen, how she values the Second Amendment. She's talking like she's Annie Oakley," Obama said, invoking the famed female sharpshooter immortalized in the musical "Anne Get Your Gun."

Obama continued, saying "Hillary Clinton is out there like she's on the duck blind every Sunday. She's packing a six-shooter. Come on, she knows better. That's some politics being played by Hillary Clinton."

Obama said the former first lady's history in the White House and Senate proved she was not as sensitive to the concerns of working class voters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere as she tried to suggest. Pennsylvania's primary is April 22.

"I just have to remind people of the track record," Obama said. "This is the same person who took money from financial folks on Wall Street and then voted for bankruptcy bill that makes it harder for folks right here in Pennsylvania to get a fair shake. Who do you think is out of touch?

"This is the same person who spent a decade with her husband campaigning for NAFTA, and now goes around saying she's opposed to NAFTA," Obama said, referring to the North American Free Trade Agreement that is widely unpopular in blue collar communities.

The Clinton campaign issued a quick retort to Obama's comments.

"For months, Barack Obama and his campaign have relentlessly attacked Hillary Clinton's character and integrity by using Republican talking points from the 1990s," said spokesman Phil Singer. "The shame is his. Senator Clinton does know better _ she knows better than to condescend and talk down to voters like Senator Obama did."

Clinton: When I Last Fired A Gun Is "Not A Relevant Question"
By Eric Kleefeld
April 13, 2008, 6:30PM

[Talking Points Memo]

When asked to elaborate on her experiences with guns and religion — after her remarks yesterday about having been taught to shoot by her dad — Hillary Clinton said that such a question "is not a relevant question in this debate."

Rather, the issue is about how the Democratic Party and its attitudes are perceived by working-class voters. "We can answer that some other time," Clinton told a press conference. "This is about what people feel is being said about them. I went to church on Easter. I mean, so?"

In Mostly Sedate Debate, Democrats Show More Unity Than Strife
By ADAM NAGOURNEY AND JEFF ZELENY

April 27, 2007
New York Times

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton was professorial and emphatic as she spoke Thursday night about health care, Iraq and whether Wal-Mart was good for America (a ''mixed blessing,'' she decided) .

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, by reputation a dynamic performer, was reserved and cautious as he talked about a donor with a shady past, how he would respond to a terrorist attack on American shores and his biggest mistake (not doing more to stop Congress from intervening in the Terri Schiavo case, he said).

The setting was the first Democratic presidential debate of the 2008 campaign, a surprisingly sedate and meandering affair, filled with as many moments of awkward humor as memorable insight into the qualifications of the candidates or the policy differences among them.

* * *

She invoked her husband and the visit she made with the former president to Columbine High School in Colorado after the massacre there in 1999.

''I remember very well when I accompanied Bill to Columbine after that massacre and met with the family members of those who had been killed and talked with the students, and feeling that we had to do more to try to keep guns out of the hands of the criminal and of the mentally unstable,'' she said. ''And during the Clinton administration, that was a goal, not to in any way violate people's Second Amendment right but to try to limit access to people who should not have guns.''

''We now know that the background check system didn't work, because certainly this shooter, as he's called, had been involuntarily committed as a threat to himself and others,'' she said, ''and yet he could walk in and buy a gun.''

Mrs. Clinton was one of three senators who did not raise their hands when asked if they had, as an adult, had a gun in their home; the others were Mr. Obama and Mr. Edwards.

Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, introduced as the preferred candidate of the National Rifle Association, defended his support of gun rights. Asked whether he had rethought his position after the Virginia Tech massacre, he said he would work to pass laws so that ''those with mental illnesses cannot get a gun.''

Democrat Barack Obama lashed out Sunday at rival Hillary Rodham Clinton, mocking her sudden vocal support for gun rights...

"Why, I hunted Serbian Ducks every day as a child. That's why they shot at me in Bosnia."

I'm not sure which produces more laughs. Obama's gaff or Hillary so quickly negating any positive effect at the polls for her by making an even dumber statement.

McCain had the brains to mostly keep quite. Hillary seems to be living by the saying about never missing a chance to miss an opertunity.

What a sorry lot. Is this really the best our nation can do?

Yep, after years of us falling for the "lesser of evils", THEY are now into their "evil and incompetent" mode.
