Congratulations to Trevor Immelman in winning the Masters.
To give you an idea of the enormity of his achievement, Trevor is just the second South African, after the great Gary Player, to don the famous green jacket of Augusta.
Like rugby and cricket, golf stands out as a sport in SA where great achievements have been commonplace.
We have been blessed by having great golfers such as Ernie Els (twice), Retief Goosen (twice) and Rory Sabattini, who have all finished second in the Masters but they have been beaten to the big one by their younger compatriot. This should put the immensity of his achievement in context.
But his achievement raises mixed emotions. On the one hand, we show the world what our potential as South Africans are - and could have been – that we are winners on the world stage but, as Naas puts it, on the udder hand, Darren, he is a dying breed.
The Bok’s triumph last year is probably the last world cup we will ever win. The ANC gubbermunt’s meddling will see to it. Their mantra, take it all away from whitey at all costs even if it doesn’t succeed again is what counts. Just stick it to whitey. Show him who's boss.
Our soccer team, Banana Banana is a case in point. It is ranked 69th today from a FIFA high of 16th place in 1996, before a successful white coach was replaced with a black skin in the name of ‘transformation’.
Expect the Boks to follow the same path now that another successful white coach has also been replaced.
Take it away from whitey and it falls to crap.
In celebrating Trevor’s achievement, we remember too, sadly, what South Africa could have been. Well done, Trevor.
