I don't shop at regular stores, and haven't for years. I shop a lot at thrift stores, which I consider a treasure hunt.

Last week, I found an intriguing rocking-chair. When I checked the sticker on the bottom, it was a Heywood-Wakefield, which has been around from the late 1800's. I estimate this one is from the 1940's. And it was only $30.

It's not exactly like this one; it was a wooden seat and horizontal slats in the back. It's a bit worn, but still has the original stain. Since it creaked a bit, I had to drive six screws in it to tighten it up. But it works just fine. (1 image)

I've also found two old phones like this, both still working. I paid about $7 for both. Ha ha ha ha!!

I don't imagine you expected to hear this, but you are a trend-setter nowadays. "Conspicuous Consumption" is SO out of fashion, the NEW trend is "frugal chic". Why spend $1000 on a designer chair when you can buy a perfectly good old rocking chair for $30? Why spend $600 on a iPhone when you can buy a perfectly good old-fashioned dial phone for $7, and never have to worry about the batteries going dead on it?

Yep, you are now in the front of the pack fashion-wise. Don't be surprised when some TV crew comes to your door wanting to do a feature on your cutting-edge lifestyle....

I guess about 15 years ago I was at a thrift store with a woman I know. She knew dishes and stuff like that. She turned over some plates, read the manufacturer, and her eyes bugged out. She bought the whole set, maybe $10. I forgot who made them, but she said they were worth ten times what she paid for them.

I can kill you with my brain or bash you with my shell.

Fascinating. I stopped believing every unverifiable thing you say, but fascinating nonetheless.

Some hotshot, here's his ancient chinese secret:
