Remarks of President Bill Clinton at the Dedication Ceremonies for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, April 22, 1993

Mr. Vice President, Mrs. Gore, President and Mrs. Herzog, distinguished leaders of nations from around the world who have come here to be with us today, the leaders of our Congress and the citizens of America, and especially to Mr. Meyerhoff and all of those who worked so hard to make this day possible, and even more to those who have spoken already on this program whose lives and words bear eloquent witness to why we have come here today. It is my purpose on behalf of the United States to commemorate this magnificent museum, meeting as we do among memorials within the site of the memorial to Thomas Jefferson, the author of our freedom. Near where Abraham Lincoln is seated, who gave his life so that our nation might extend its mandate of freedom to all who live within our borders. We gather near the place where the legendary and recently departed Marian Anderson sang songs of freedom, and where Martin Luther King summoned us all to dream and work together. Here on the town square of our national life, on this 50th anniversary of the Warsaw uprising, at Eisenhower Plaza on Raoul Wallenberg Place, we dedicated the United States Holocaust Museum, and so bind one of the darkest lessons in history to the hopeful soul of America. As we have seen already today, this museum is not for the dead alone, nor even for the survivors who have been so beautifully represented; it is perhaps most of all for those of us who were not there at all. To learn the lessons, to deepen our memories and our humanity, and to transmit these lessons from generation to generation. The Holocaust, to be sure, transformed the entire 20th century, sweeping aside the enlightenment hope that evil somehow could be permanently vanished from the face of the earth; demonstrating here is no war to end all war; that the struggle against the basest tendencies of our nature must continue forever and ever. The Holocaust began when the most civilized country of its day unleashed unprecedented acts of cruelty and hatred abetted by perversions of science, philosophy, and law. A culture which produced Goethe, Schiller, and Beethoven, then brought forth Hitler and Himmler. The merciless hordes who, themselves, were educated as others who were educated stood by and did nothing. Millions died for who they were, how they worshiped, what they believed, and who they loved. But one people--the Jews--were immutably marked for total destruction. They who were among their nation's most patriotic citizens, whose extinction served no military purpose nor offered any political gain, they who threatened no one were slaughtered by an efficient, unrelenting bureaucracy, dedicated solely to a radical evil with a curiously antiseptic title: The Final Solution. The Holocaust reminds us forever that knowledge divorced from values can only serve to deepen the human nightmare; that a head without a heart is not humanity. For those of us here today representing the nations of the West, we must live forever with this knowledge, even as our fragmentary awareness of crimes grew into indisputable facts, far too little was done. Before the war even started, doors to liberty were shut. And even after the United States and the Allies attacked Germany, rail lines to the camps within miles of military significant target were left undisturbed. Still there were, as has been noted, many deeds of singular courage and resistance. The Danes and the Bulgarians, men like Emmanuel Ringelbaum, who died after preserving in metal milk cans the history of the Warsaw ghetto. Janusz Korczak, who stayed with children until last breaths at Treblinka. And Raoul Wallenberg, who perhaps rescued as many as 100,000 Hungarian Jews. And those known and those never to be known, who manned the thin line of righteousness, who risked and lost their lives to save others, accruing No advantage to themselves, but nobly serving the larger cause of humanity. As the war ended, these rescuers were joined by our military forces who, alongside the allied armies, played the decisive role in bringing the Holocaust to an end. Overcoming the shock of discovery, they walked survivors from those dark, dark places into the sweet sunlight of redemption, soldiers and survivors being forever joined in history and humanity. This place is their place, too. For them as for us, to memorialize the past and steel ourselves for the challenges of tomorrow. We must all now frankly admit that there will come a time in the not-too-distant future when the Holocaust will pass from living reality and shared experience to memory and to history. To preserve this shared history of anguish, to keep it vivid and real so that evil can be combatted and contained, we are here to consecrate this memorial and contemplate its meaning for us; for more than any other event, the Holocaust gave rise to the universal declaration of human rights, the charter of our common humanity. And it contributed, indeed, made certain the long overdue creation of the nation of Israel. Now, with the demise of communism and the rise of democracy out of the ashes of former communist states, with the end of the Cold War we must not only rejoice in so much that is good in the world, but recognize that not all in this new world is good. We learn again and again that the world has yet to run its course of animosity and violence. Ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia is but the most brutal and blatant and ever-present manifestation of what we see also with the oppression of the Kurds in Iraq, the abusive treatment of the Baha'i in Iran, the endless race-based violence in South Africa. And in many other places we are reminded again and again how fragile are the safeguards of civilization. So do the depraved and insensate bands now loose in the modern world. Look at the liars and the propagandists among us, the skinheads and the Liberty Lobby here at home; the Afrikaaners resistance movement in South Africa; the Radical Party of Serbia, the Russian blackshirts. With them we must all compete for the interpretation and the preservation of history of what we know and how we should behave. The evil represented in this museum is incontestible. But as we are its witness, so must we remain its adversary in the world in which we live. So we must stop the fabricators of history and the bullies as well. Left unchallenged, they would still prey upon the powerless; and we must not permit that to happen again. To build bulwarks against this kind of evil, we know there is but one path to take. It is the direction opposite that which produced the Holocaust, it is that which recognizes that among all our differences, we still cannot ever separate ourselves one from another. We must find in our diversity our common humanity. We must reaffirm that common humanity, even in the darkest and deepest of our own disagreements. Sure, there is new hope in this world. The emergence of new, vibrant democratic states, many of whose leaders are here today, offers a shield against the inhumanity we remember. And it is particularly appropriate that this museum is here in this magnificent city, an enduring tribute to democracy. It is a constant reminder of our duty to build and nurture the institutions of public tranquility and humanity. It occurs to me that some may be reluctant to come inside these doors because the photographs and remembrance of the past impart more pain than they can bear. I understand that. I walked through the museum on Monday night and spent more than two hours. But I think that our obligations to history and posterity alike should beckon us all inside these doors. It is a journey that I hope every American who comes to Washington will take, a journey I hope all the visitors to this city from abroad will make. I believe that this museum will touch the life of everyone who enters and leaves everyone forever changed; a place of deep sadness and a sanctuary of bright hope; an ally of education against ignorance, of humility, against arrogance, an investment in a secure future against whatever insanity lurks ahead. If this museum can mobilize morality, then those who have perished will thereby gain a measure of immortality. I know this is a difficult day for those we call 'survivors.' Those of us born after the war cannot yet fully comprehend their sorrow or pain. But if our expressions are inadequate to this moment, at least may I share these words inscribed in the Book of Wisdom: 'the souls of the righteous are in the hands of God, and no torment shall touch them. In the eyes of fools they seem to die. They're passing away was thought to be an affliction. And their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. On this day of triumphant reunion and celebration, I hope those who have survived have found their peace. Our task, with God's blessing upon our souls and the memories of the fallen in our hearts and minds, is to the ceaseless struggle to preserve human rights and dignity. We are now strengthened and will be forever strengthened by remembrance. I pray that we shall prevail.

In 1993, she made a film titled Waco: The Big Lie, which contained footage of the siege of the Branch Davidian church in Waco, Texas. The film was distributed widely on videotape and for a short period after its release she was a regular guest on talk radio shows, especially those of Art Bell and Chuck Harder. The film challenged the mainstream news reports of the Branch Davidian siege and created a small sensation, alleging a government coverup of the events surrounding the siege.

Some of her movie's allegations have since been vindicated by professionally produced films such as Waco: The Rules of Engagement and Waco: A New Revelation, but the film's most controversial aspects have not. Specifically, Linda Thompson showed a split second of footage of a tank with what appeared to be fire emitting from it into Mt. Carmel and she claimed it was a flamethrower used to start the fire that consumed the church. When the full footage was acquired by Michael McNulty, the "fire" was shown to be sunlight reflecting off sheetrock insulation on a wall panel that had fallen on the tank. Adding a sense of surety to her flamethrower claim, Thompson claimed that the tank backed out twice and each time the flame was clearly visible, but in fact she just ran the same split-second clip twice.

Thompson also claimed that three BATF agents killed by friendly fire during the siege were all former bodyguards of then-President Bill Clinton and the friendly fire was actually an assassination ordered by Clinton. Her film was also heavily criticized for allegedly showing footage of the siege out of chronological order while Thompson's narration declared that the order shown in her video was the actual order of the events that took place.

She followed up her first film with another, Waco II: The Big Lie Continues, in which she offered rebuttals to those who were critical of her first film, declared everyone critical of the film to be part of a cover-up, and continued to stand by the most controversial allegations in Waco: The Big Lie.

I think this woman Linda Thompson is the one who did disappear. She called for the big 'march on washington' on september 19, 1994 and then afterwards she disappeared. The Wikipedia article doesn't even mention this about her. In that wikipedia article she's constantly referred to as a 'conspiracy theorist'. And they list one of her crazy ideas being that 3 of the 4 BATF agents killed on 02/28/03 were Clinton body-guards. But Clinton himself said they'd been his bodyguards. and she's portrayed as a kook over it.

In order to function in polite society now it seems that there are some lies that we must accept or else at least we must ignore and never speak of.

In all the employees of the Treasury Department I have seen, I've noticed a rare commitment to serve this Nation conscientiously. And I must say, with the recent tragedies freshly in our minds, I think that we should all once again honor the plaque on the 4th floor of this building that notes more than 160 Treasury agents who have been killed in the line of duty in our Nation's history. From the Secret Service agents who protect our Presidents and who have a particular chore in me because I like to get out and see the people who put me in this job, to Customs agents who wage war on drugs, to the agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, many of the employees of this Department risk their lives to protect the lives of the rest of us. My prayers and I'm sure yours are still with the families of all four of the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents who were killed in Waco: Todd McKeehan and Conway Le Bleu of New Orleans, Steve Willis of Houston, and Robert Williams from my hometown of Little Rock. Three of those four were assigned to my security during the course of the primary or the general election. My gratitude is also with the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents who helped to evacuate the World Trade Center in New York in the aftermath of the explosion and later, who helped to find the identification number of the van that led to the arrest of the first suspect in the bombing. I know that all of you join with me in praying for a peaceful and sure and quick conclusion to the events in Waco.

I looked on Barack obama's web site. It said that he wants to keep enough troops in Iraq to hold down the military bases and to keep the Iraq government in power. It also said that he thinks we should keep those bases so that we can attack other countries in the region.

I guess some people do have hope that we invade other countries from Iraq.

I read previously on Obama's website in the 'issues' section that regarding Iraq he'd reduce the troops over there, but not withdraw them all, that he would leave some there to keep order and to facilitate the ability to attack other nations from the permanent bases there. so, I guess he's changed his web site since then. Sleazy people do that. I've also heard him make pro-war statements. He is very pro-war with regard to Afghanistan & Iran, and in his own words he supports the 'war on terror'.

also, in the last year there's been several supplemental funding bills specifically to fund the war-spending. and I'm under the impression that Obama has voted for them each time. All it takes is a 50% vote in either the House or the Senate to de-fund war-funding for either war. and Obama has not done the job even to provide his vote for this cause.

The Democrats have some people convinced that they cannot stop the war because Republicans won't let them. But Democrats are the majority in both the House & the Senate. and about 80% of the democrats still vote to fund the wars. The constitution is very explicit that all funding for anything must be approved by congress before the money can be spent. a democrat that votes to fund the wars is a democrat that supports the wars.

imo, this is why Ed and Elaine Brown didn't meet the same fate. Too many people were watching. Fedgov knew how people would react. Not everyone, but enough to get the job done.

Long ago and far away I once believed that the "elections" in America were honestly conducted and truly a manifestation of the "will of the people."

The Amerika of the present day has shown that the "elections" are an illusion, a great deception, nothing more than a mind-numbing, emotion-laden, media-fueled-distraction to further discombobulate the already fried minds of the "Registered Voter Club."

The "Candidates" are pre-selected and groomed (read: conditioned) to obediently serve their "Masters" (read: not the People) to promote their sinister Agenda.

In this Amerika, the true power is not with those who foolishly "cast their votes," but entirely with the "Masters and their minions" who allegedly "COUNT" said votes.

For those who are excited by Obama, I say good. But I take issue with this remark above. Because all the polls for over a year have shown 65-75% of the Americans want to bring all the troops home from Iraq. I remember in January of 2007 right after the democrat majority took its seats in House & Senate. We had a news story here posted from DailyKos not the mainstream media and it said that 75 House Democrats were sponsoring a bill that would bring the troops home in 6 months. And that legislation was never voted upon or further discussed. Myself & others here were disappointed. I'd be happy to vote for a local democrat for congress if he was anti-war. It was Pelosi I guess who prevented this legislation from advancing. and Pelosi was elected by the democrats to her position.

I speak only for myself of course, but I bet others agree. We're very disappointed that the democrats aren't really anti-war. I also think they should impeach bush over the lies he's told to justify the war.

a big problem with Obama's credibility are the democrats who've preceded him. Like Clinton. In the 1992 campaign Clinton made a very prominent promise during a big debate where he ridiculed George HW Bush over his close ties with China and he said that he would get tough on china. Then when in office Bill Clinton was in bed with the Chinese, he gave them many favors, favors that cost us Americans a lot, and he made the currency fix deal with China that GW Bush has continued.

We've seen a lot of liars in office for a long time. Obama is not on our side. He's pro-federal reserve, he's pro-war, he's in favor of the trade treaties. he's not in tune with issues we care about. If he spoke like he was, then maybe we'd listen. Obama has advisors who are with the Council on Foreign Relations including this Brezinski fellow who came out with a book recently saying that he wants the United Nations to rule the world and for the US to help arrange that to happen.

I din't know about this documentary. thanks for letting me see it. I think that is a great choice for the name 'bloody ridge'.

and I remember seeing on that video 'Rules of Engagement' some video of congressman John Shaddegg question Reno. He told her repeatedly that the video showed the tank moving forward into the gymnasium and then moving back a total of 17 times while it demolished the gymnasium. It demolished 1 room, the gymnasium completely and did not harm the adjoining rooms hardly at all. it moved forward and back 17 times into this room that was itself about 2,000 SF room and turned it all into rubble covering up the trap door to the underground shelter thus trapping many people inside. and he asked reno why the tank did that repeatedly. each time she assured him that the tank had merely bumped into the building accidentally that it was completely 'inadvertent'. and I remember hearing Shadegg talk about this on the radio. He pressed with his questions, and she made a fool of herself with ridiculous answers. So sad that the mass media didn't focus in on that and completely discredit reno for it.

Shadegg unlike Bono has learned to go along to get along. He's running for Senate now.

I remember reading about how Senator Daschle was speaking a very strong intention & desire to have a wide-open congressional investigation & hearing in public to look into all aspects of the september 11 events to get to the bottom of it. and then within days he received anthrax letter in his senate office. and now he's not in office any more.

if all Americans eligible were required to vote as they are in some other countries, and if they had a choice for 'neither', then I think that neither would win.

All the voters accomplish is to further empower & endorse Babylon. at some point we must just cease all efforts trying to stop them, be still and know who it is that made us and do the good works we're assigned to do.

Indeed, Mr. Jones, despite not being a big fan of Dubyuh's outta control spending and financially contributing to Peroutka's Constitution Party campaign coffers, I pulled the lever for Bush as a vote AGAINST HanoiJohn Kerry.

But I voted. Even if you write in a "local political activist", you are doing your civic duty and exercising your franchise to vote. I don't know SCPO and I'm sure he's a good patriot. However, when you just throw up your hands in dispair and assume nothing we can do matters in the overall scheme of things, that's surrendering in my eyes. And nobody wins $#!+ by quitting.

When that political activist Brian Quig who lived here in Phoenix was killed in the summer of 2003 the police called up his family and told them to come pick up the body as he had unfortunately died at age 54. and they came down to pick up his body, and the police handed them an urn. He had already been cremated without anyone examining the body except the police.

Brian Quig lived a life of poverty though he was an educated lawyer and extremely intelligent. In the early 1970's he worked as a researcher in congress. He identified that there were 6 corporations trying to buy up the media. He worked for people who wanted to stop that from happening. Today those 6 corporations own about 95% of the entire media in the United States. Only a few independent small newspapers & magazines remain and those owners will eventually sell out because the prices they get are so good.

Brian Quig investigated scandals involving prominent people in his life and supported himself with menial labor jobs. He got paid nothing for his real work. He provided key evidence that sent Charles Keating to jail. He had many contacts in federal law enforcement & intelligence.

Quig told a story about how when he was a deletate to the Republican National Convention in 1980 he spoke with a congressman who told him the following what Ronald Reagan had told the congressman. Reagan was in his hotel by himself trying to figure out who he should select for vice president. He was due the next night to come to the convention and announce his choice. Someone knocked on the door and reagan answered. It was Walter Cronkite and Henry Kissinger. They came in wanting to help him with his decision. They told him that if he selected George HW Bush to be the VP, then they would assure him victory in November with media coverage that would facilitate such. They told him that if he did not select Bush, then they assured him that he would lose the election. and not only that they told him he'd be completely discredited by a scandal. They showed him evidence that would be used to destroy him.

Reagan went to the convention that very night in an unscheduled speech very late. and he announced to the world that his choice for Vice President was George HW Bush.

and when I write that guy's name in the ballot as a write-in I am doing something that is vain and stupid. Because I think it matters, yet it does not.

In all of human history there has never been a time when the people achieved anything very much good unless the creator led them to do it. If the creator is not on our side, then we will not prevail. The creator orchestrates important events not for our purposes, but for his.

But reagan never said the nature of the scandal. I think Reagan was on our side. But he was compromised by his associations with people who made him. Reagan was planning on running for president back in 1968, and there was a meeting at the Bohemian Grove where Reagan, Nixon and others decided to let Nixon run first, then Reagan.

The king-makers make our kings. We don't make our kings. We merely fall in line after the king is selected.

What I just told you about the king-makers I learned from reading the bible, the bible says precisely that. The bible also says that this world is made in such a way that it is evil people who are destined to rule in this world prior to Jesus' return. There are additional reasons for not wanting to be identified with the REGISTERED VOTERS CLUB.

When, in the Republic of Old, "We The People" did have and enjoy some measure of legitimate Constitutional Power, the vote meant much more.

Within CORPORATION U.S. and their rigged POLITICAL PARTIES and alleged ELECTIONS it is an entirely different matter. The CREATED REGISTERED VOTERS are not even real, flesh and blood humans; but they do rely upon one to give them ability and consciousness.

Virtually all that we "see" with our eyes, or "hear" with our ears, is manipulated drama.
