An interview of Alan Keyes by Mike Ferguson on Missouri Viewpoints:

Just hours after falling short in his bid for the Constitution Party’s Presidential nomination, former US Ambassador Alan Keyes sat down with Mike Ferguson to discuss his thoughts on the events of the party’s convention, the state of America and his political future.

Dr. Keyes made it clear that he is not done working in politics, saying he is “…called to a role in politics…”

Disputing claims by some of those in the CP leadership, Keyes states that he was invited to stand as a candidate for the nomination and then proverbially stabbed in the back by many in the party.

He described his opinion of Constitution Party saying it “…professes to be for liberty and self-government [and] is, in fact, governed by a spirit of dictatorship and despotism.” Keyes also stated he believes he was rejected because he would not sign on to some party platform positions he described as “…not truly Constitutional.”

During the interview, Keyes said he will stay involved in politics in some way and that he “…will continue to champion all those things that are consistent with what I believe to be the calling to stand for the justice and liberty that our country is rooted on: the authority of Almighty God.”

When asked is his campaign for the Presidency will continue as an Independent this year or if he will run for office again in the future, Keyes was noncommittal, saying he plans to pray about what is next and “It’s in God’s hands.”

Phillips: Right at the Wrong Time Posted by Trent Hill --- April 27th, 2008

I’ll have more reports in the coming days about the Constitution Party convention, and hopefully I’ll be able to relate to you some of the more interesting stories and happenings of the Convention. But here is a simple overview of how I felt about Howard Phillip’s speech.

It was foolish.

Was it factually correct? I’ll not speak to that, because i’ll likely have people squabbling about it in the comments section. This question avoids the more appropriate question—was it appropriate? At Convention, few people opposed Keyes more openly than myself (although Red Phillips certainly gave them a rough time). However, what Mr. Phillips did, rather than what he said, was an inappropriate use of his authority. Howard Phillips was given a Convention speaking slot and was, in this fashion, a recognized speaker of the party. He used this bully pullpit to rail against Alan Keyes in a way that made it appear as if the party as a whole endorsed these views. If Mr. Phillips wanted to make that speech then he should have made it at a seperate time.
But even more importantly than the manner and timing in which the speech was presented—it just wasn’t neccesary.

Keyes was soundly defeated before the covention ever got underway, and the speech neither increased nor decreased the size of his delegation. When I arrived at convention and attempted to assess the situation I advised some of my partners-in-crime (who shall remain nameless, until further notice) that by my calculations, Keyes had only about 120 votes. By the end of Roll-Call, Keyes had accumulated 125.7 votes. Baldwin soundly defeated Keyes by a 3-to-1 margin, and did so without the 12-hour delegate-conferences that Keyes was hosting. So here I am calling out Phillips: Next time—don’t go blowing up the bridges that our respective states have built, we can handle it.

And it was obvious that many people, including the most ardent opponents of Keyes, opposed this abuse of power.

Either way, the CP fended off a neocon opportunist flake...

More Baldwin media Posted by Stephen Gordon --- April 27th, 2008

Matthew Robert’s is talking about possibly going “constitutional” over at Taki. He introduces Chuck Baldwin in this manner:

Now that Ron Paul is effectively out of the race, there may again be a candidate for paleoconservatives (notwithstanding Gottfried’s obituary) to support. For those of you unfamiliar with Baldwin, he’s a pastor at the Crossroad Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida, former activist in the Moral Majority (who since has repudiated the Religious Right’s groveling for crumbs before the GOP), a radio personality, and a columnist, whose pieces regularly appear at VDare and numerous other sites. He is sound on immigration, sound on trade, and sound on the war.

He also provides an argument for voting third party:

Unless another, more electable third-party candidate steps forward (like Lou Dobbs), Baldwin may be one’s best bet for two reasons. First, voting for a minor third-party candidate sends a better message than abstaining or voting for a Leftist like Barack Obama (who’s hostile towards working-class Anglo-European Americans, wrong on immigration, dishonest about trade, and probably will start a war in Darfur), which would be interpreted as a general shift of the “conservative” electorate to the multicultural Left.
